Another Cover I Love: Jack of Fables #19

I absolutely love the fact that Jack and his cronies are hiding under Bo Peep's skirt while a crew of Keystone cops struggle to get to them. The expression on Jack's face alone sells the cover to me. The rich texturing of her gown and the voluminous hoop skirt add a beauty that makes the reader's eye wander to it. If I had this cover and the Fantastic Four cover to chooser between, I would pick this in a heartbeat. Bolland's amazing eye for detail and his sense of humor have saved the day many a time.

Though I have always preferred having the artist on a book illustrate the cover, having Bolland on hand to do so is a surefire way to sell a book. I can't deny that.

Gratuitous!

Oh, wait...wrong thing.

Seriously, Fables is such a joy to read. I haven't gotten a chance to read Jack's spin-off series yet, but I hope to soon...especially with such great reviews coming in from everywhere.

And, yes, Brian Bolland is defintely one of the masters when it comes to great cover art. He's one of the few artists who still understand the subtle art of telling a "one panel story" on a cover, rather than just plopping down a pin-up shot, like so many of the younger bucks resort to.

Brian Bolland is one of my all-time favorite comic book artists. Everything he does is so detailed. This cover is a great example!

Yeah, I love Bolland and have been reading him since way back in the Judge Dredd 2000 AD Megazines. I think I read Camelot 3000 10 times or more just 'cause he drew the whole thing. I don't think I've ever seen a cover by him that I didn't love...

Mark, nice try there! It could be gratuitous... oh wait, wrong feature!! :-)

Bolland is the master indeed. He always brings the extra ingredient, so to speak. When I see a Bolland cover, I pretty much always think "how clever". I don't think that very often!

Lisa, Bolland is definitely one of the greats. There are books I am not buying and if I see a Bolland cover, I really want to change my mind and pick up a copy! That is his power!

Carl, thank you for bringing up Camelot 3000. What a gorgeous book. I have read it several times as well, and it holds up beautifully. It is a good book to use to introduce adults to the comic book genre. You have good taste!
