Conundrum of the Week: Parking at Health Clubs

After working a head of steam up about the latest Supergirl issue, and feeling uncharacteristically irritated for the last day or so, I am feeling better tonight. I can feel my positive attititude coming back to me and am quite relieved about it. 90% of it is the fantastic comments on the Supergirl thread by you lovely people and the other 10% is the fact that I worked out for almost three hours tonight. Sweet relief.

With that in mind, I just have one nagging question to pose to you all:

Why do people going to the health club to exercise fight over the closest parking spots? I noticed tonight that I had to wait behind two cars waiting for people to pull out before I could go park in the back like I usually do. I just don't understand why a person getting ready to exercise would fret about another 20 feet of walking. I purposely park in the back to get some additional calories burned, so it really confuses me. It isn't like we are going to the health club to lay down and have margaritas, you know??

That is the burning question tonight. I am in need of some resolution through justification or rebuttal. Let me know what you think!

(I know this is completely unrelated to comics, but I really am curious about this phenomenon!)

Oh, that’s easy. It’s because they’re afraid their souls will get swallowed up if they spend too much time in the parking lot.

Welp, if you are leaving a public building at night and maybe alone I can understand. Especially late at night and maybe in a lonesome or not-so-great-area. Buttttttttt, I really hate that myself. I used to think it was so funny, for a while there, the popular thing to wear (and still is) was athletic clothes, jerseys and such and you see people that are huge wearing them. And I used to have friends that were so damned lazy, they had to find that perfect close parking space. But on the flip side, I had another obnoxious friend that would park further away 'cause it was annoying to use and I guess since he was such a liberal busybody wanted us to exercise against our wills, we farm boys who never did a lick of work. Anyway, stupid behavior seems universe to all peoples of any size and shape...

Part of me thinks people park that close to satisfy seem entitlement issues, they believe the closer the spot, the better. Then again people could just be frakking nuts...which I agree with more, lol.

Don't worry about the occasional non-comic blog, you gotta have them once and awhile otherwise things get stagnant and repetitive. Youse good :)

That's weird. I don't go to a gym, so I didn't know that, but I always wondered why people are so adverse to walking across a parking lot or will wait longer just to get an elevator. I walk and walk and walk at work, and I'll still take the stairs or park wherever and walk to where I need to get. I have these fancy things called legs, may as well use them.

But as to why, I'll agree with Nick above - people are nuts. 'nuff said.

Like Nick said, entitlement. It's the same thing that makes drivers race to get in front of other people even when they aren't in a hurry. They just gotta win all the little games they play during a day in the life.

If you can break the competitive/entitlement habit, you will be a much happier person. Myself, still working on it.

I used to go to Bally's and I'd see that all the time. Especially when I'd work out in the morning. I think it's that competitive thing - you must have the BEST spot, even for working out. Or else they know that when they finish they'll have only a very small bit of time to dash out to get to work on time and so they need to park close to get to work on time. Although I think you work out at night, so that theory doesn't apply here. Maybe they figure they'll be so exhausted they'd never make it all the way to the back of the parking lot without collapsing.

Swinebread- OMG, that could be true!! :-)

Carl, I totally understand that if it is dark it isn't always a good idea to park further away. As a lady on her own, I try and be extra careful during the winter when parking, but usually end up in the back of the lot regardless. Good thought- I hadn't considered that.

On the flip side, you are too cool, Carl. I appreciate your wisdom on this one!

Nick, I hadn't considered the entitlement issue but that is really true. Where I work out is "the" club in town, so it is people in our small town "society". If there is a pecking order, it is something they haven't clued me in about. :-)

Thanks for the kindness about the non-comic related post. It had to be done!

Eaglewing, you make an interesting point. I always walk if given the choice between escalators, elevators, or the stairs. That is why I am always blown away by how testy people get when stairs are the only alternative. My grandma had polio and is in a wheelchair so she doesn't have a choice, but she has a sense of humor that if she could walk up the stairs she would. Don't even get me started on the handicapped stops!! :-)

Tegan, wise words my friend. We are all on that path. :-)

Lisa, I laughed so hard when I read your line about tired legs- I have actually had nights where my legs are absolute noodles. I still walk!! :-)

Health club parking is a fascinating, confusing thing. I don't think I will ever understand it!
