After a sad week of sorts with the passing of the wonderful Mike Wieringo, I didn't know if I wanted to do the gratuitous post any more. It took some soul searching to decide that this weekly feature is more of a quest for opinions and a bit of fun then a biting, mean spirited venture.
So here I am.
As a huge fan of Adam Hughes' art, and as someone that knows he draws the ladies a bit gratuitous to begin with, I was a bit unsure about selecting this cover. What made me finally decide to is the pose. Catwoman is doing a bit of a Janet Jackson imitation. The only thing different is the lack of men's hands and the fact that she is wearing a top. Otherwise, that is what this cover reminded me of.
I was a bit surprised at how exagerated her proportions were compared to normal as well. It made me wonder if this was a bit over the top. As an Amazons Attack crossover, I was very surprised not to see another woman on the cover pointing a spear at Selina or doing something with a weapon. The basic nature of this cover caught me off guard.
I have to ask you: Is this gratuitous?

I think this is a gorgeous cover. The texture of the suit, the expression on Selina's face, all perfect. She's showing some cleavage, which given how much is covered, makes this almost chaste. Nothing gratuitous about this IMO.
And while this was an Amazons Attack issue, it was really about ending a threat to Helena. I could almost pretend it had nothing to do with Amazons Attack.
Cool on continuing the feature - I think its all meant in fun as well.
This cover, I don't think is gratuitous or out of character either. It's actually pretty tasteful all things considered.
I vote "No" on this one. It's sexy without going over the top (or out of the top, as the case may be). Hughes , as you said, tends toward the gratuitous but this one doesn't qualify.
It's the kind of cover that would make me check out the issue which is what covers are supposed to do.

I'm going to say not gratuitous. Esp considering Hughes drew it. It is one of those covers that doesn't have anything much to do with what's going on inside, but still, it's a pretty cool cover. Sure, her proportions are a little unrealistic, but I've seen much worse. She's still clothed and nothing is way over-the-top.
At first I thought it was a little much, but compared to other stuff out there, it is actually pretty tame.

Hmmmm, maybe in the '60s before Ms. Peel of The Avengers, but like everyone said, not really anymore...
I like it but my one complaint would be the crappy cleavage. Sorry but it's really flat, ruler drawn line down the middle with no curve which, although doesn't ruin the image, is quite noticable when that's the main focal point.
At the risk of bringing the tone down, I have to say, one of the things that's really struck me about the depiction of Catwoman on covers from the past few years is her figure.
She incredibly voluptuous, without having the defiant hips of a twelve year old.
I think these covers have been really well composed pin-ups, projecting just the right amount of self-empowered sass and sex appeal that says Selina Kyle. They're great!
I have to stop and agree that at least Selina has an adult woman's figure. I appreciate that at least. She has curves, and that is always a plus for me.
