Is This Gratuitous: Painkiller Jane #3 Quesada Cover

Painkiller Jane is a kick ass gal who doesn't take any crap. Her book by Dynamite Entertainment reflects that, as does the adapted television series. Jane could drink several shots and make you wish for death without thinking twice. She is a hardcore. That is why I am a bit surprised to be presenting issue #3 as a candidate for gratuitous cover of the week discussion.

At first brief glance, this cover just says "dark and harsh". Her co-creator and Marvel EIC Joe Quesada did the cover after all...

Then I look a bit closer and I am reminded a bit of Britney and her flashing days.

Am I losing my mind or do I see cheeks? I don't mean her face...

I am in shock.

I don't even think I can say anymore about it. I don't have the words.

Question: is this gratuitous?

Ohmygoodness... you're right. You can definitely see her personal places. Verdict: gratuitous and rather ewwww.

Yeah, I'm at a point where it seems pretty obvious Quesada's got some "issues".

Gratuitous...and shameful.

Let's review, shall we?

First off, it's not a Marvel or DC and certainly not even an Archie Comic. It's A DYNAMITE! Comic and I can't help but notice a total lack of "The Comics Code" stamp upon the cover.

Secondly, it's pretty typical of the PKJ/Palmiotti/Quesada covers/insides. One issue I seem to recall, Jane was nude for several panels until she found a trench coat and still nude underneath.

And what is PKJ really? It's a guy's fantasy of an indestructible bad-ass woman cop, kind of like Wolverine with a badge and gun. And she evolved out of 22 Bridges where she was investigating the stealing/slavery kidnappings of 22 women.

Gratuitous? Yeah, but she works in the tawdry world of vice, sex crimes, kidnapping/slavery, drugs and mob violence? So, I guess looking like Maryanne from Gilligan's Island might be out. I bought this comic months ago and didn't notice this at all, not till it was pointed out. Hmmmmmm, that's kind of interesting in its self...

In one word yes. You know, a skirt is supposed to cover that area, otherwise it's just a very big belt. Sheesh.

Something about the anatomy is bugging me. Shouldn't more of the area that skirts cover at the front be visible? Is PKJ some sort of mutant?

This cover makes my brain hurt.

Doesn't anyone wear underwear any more?

Not since Britney and Lindsay made it "fashionable" to go commando. ;)

Eww! If that's the case, then I'm proudly unfashionable.

Okay, after reviewing this and taking into consideration the butt cheeks being shown, the call on this is gratuitous.

Yikes.
