Random Thoughts and Musings

Today is my hubby's birthday, so we went out to dinner. It was a nice, quiet one with Jim and my friend Kerry. What I really appreciated is that we ate at Applebees and they had a great "Weight Watchers" menu so I didn't have to worry about overeating. I had a steak with portobello mushrooms, baby red potatoes, and broccoli and it was very filling without the portions being too much. We had a wonderful time.

Yesterday I finally saw the Captain America Omnibus Volume #1 and it was perfection. I wanted to buy it so bad that it hurt to walk away from it. I looked at it quite closely, and it is incredible. The specs are as follows:

"Collecting Eisner Award-nominated Best Writer Ed Brubaker's first 25 landmark issues of Captain America in one titanic tome, plus the Captain America 65th Anniversary Special and Winter Soldier: Winter Kills one-shots! This deluxe hardcover, fat-packed with extras, features the story that stunned readers worldwide and sent shockwaves through the entire Marvel Universe: the death of Captain America! Also including the return of Cap's wartime partner, Bucky Barnes, as the Winter Soldier; the death and life of his greatest enemy, the Red Skull; and the emergences of a new threat, General Aleksander Lukin, the head of one of the most powerful corporations in the world! Collecting Captain America #1-25, Captain America 65th Anniversary Special and Winter Soldier: Winter Kills. "

The collection is 744 pages and weighs almost 5 pounds. It is substantial in every way possible. The only complaint I could think of is that it might irritate my carpel tunnel. Otherwise, this is just fantastic. Ed Brubaker's work on this series is a revelation. It is available online at several places, at Borders and other book sellers, or check with your local retailer and see if they can order it.

One last word on the Playboy "Wonder Woman" cover. I am amazed at the veritable chirping of crickets around here with regard to it. I was terrified that I would have folks with their pitchforks trying to argue with me. Instead, I got my friends Swinebread and Lisa, and was very comforted and at their intelligence and grace. Whew!

I am off to spend some more quality time with the hubby and then watch the season premiere of "Rock of Love 2". Maybe rocker Bret Michaels will have more luck this time around!! Have a wonderful evening!

Oh, I want that Cap omnibus. $47 at Amazon - guess I'll have to save some pennies.

Happy Birthday to Jim, and I look forward to the upcoming Rock of Love episode recaps :)

Bought the omnibus at instocktrades as a Christmas gift for myself.

LOOOOVEEEE IT.

The extras alone = drool worthy.

I am gonna give away the Winter Soldier single issues probably now, if you don't already have them all though, let me know and I'll send them your way.

Happy 'B' Jimbo!

Will never buy this Killin' Cap Stuff...

I would read a trade I checked out from the library though...

Tell James "Happy Birthday" for me.

That Cap omnibus is beautiful. We bought a few - two for the store and one for ourselves. I know we still have one left on the shelves. I have not had the time to read the Omnibus yet, but I will definitely have to make time soon. Maybe once I finish the novel I'm working through.

I hope you're going to give us the Rock of Love updates once again! Those were fun.

Wish Jim a Happy Birthday from me. The Cap book is really nice and I want it. I've found a lot of these omnibus editions are a lot cheaper on Amazon. And with the price of the books the shipping is ususally free. I try to spend my money at my local comic shop but if the savings is too great I have to get the book where I can save the most money.

Happy Birthday.

on to my complaining.

I think it's a sick corporate impulse, correlative to the "new issue number one" tendencies, to release collected editions collecting good chunks of well-sold stories from the past few years of a series/franchise/character that is approximately forty to eight years old.... and call it Volume 1 as if there were no other Daredevil series before Kevin Smith wrote his weird fictional character-killing spree or as if there are no Captain America stories from prior years which would be just as worthy or fine-selling if collected into an Omnibus.

I haven't read Ed Brubaker's Cap. I cannot afford a single issue and I've never seen a trade paper back. By all accounts it is good and I'll believe that without looking. It does sound more than a little insulting to have a pretense that there is no Jack Kirby Cap stories.

What I would do, of course, if not pre-number this Omnibus as Omnibus #30 or some other large number... is title it "Captain America Brubaker Omnibus vol 1".

Just as I would have entitled "Daredevil Vol. 1" hardback as "Marvel Knights Daredevil Vol. 1" which is not what it was called but what it should have been called.

This grumpiness really started when "The Very Best of Spider-Man Vol 1" had a bunch of stories from the previous year but a serious lacking of what I, or others, would call the very best of Spider-Man.

No thinking comic book historian considers the best Spidey stories of all the ones only published in this particular century.

I think that's about it. With as a large a catalog of old material they could reprint for little cost and then sell it, you'd think they'd gear their more contemporary productions to market that old material.
