Sue and Reed: The Drama Continues to Build in FF 538

MILD SPOILER

At the hospital where Johnny is in a coma, Sue and Reed proceeded to have the most contrived fight I have ever seen. It was like a bad soap opera. As someone who has had fights with her spouse, and knows the drill, it was especially unbelievable.

In my mind, there is no way that Sue did not know that Reed was going to his secret meetings. As husband and wife, there are no secrets. I know that when someone tells me a confidence, I am very upfront that I tell my spouse everything, so why should this be any different? Even if Reed tried to keep it quiet, Sue knows him very well. She would have figured something fishy was up. Having this be a new issue just doesn't feel authentic.

At any rate, Fantastic Four 538 only seals my feelings about this impending split. I expect that by next issue Sue will have gone rogue, as much as a mother of two can, and have joined Captain America's side in this Civil War.

Bringing back Thor in the FF title has served to project smoke and mirrors on the relationship problems, but it doesn't fool me. As much as I eagerly await Thor's return, I boil with rage about Reed and Sue.

What are your thoughts?

I am a huge Fantastic Four fan, and I can't picture Sue and Reed seperating, but I am enjoying the story anyway so far.

Sue has always struck me as the common sense in the team, while Reed is blind to anything once he starts working on a problem and that seems to be how this is playing out so far. Will I be happy if they split forever, no. Do I think the story is working so far, yes. I am concerned, but it is that good kind of concerned we get when we worry about our friends and are anxious to see how it all plays out.

DC did a bunch of crisis books to shake the dust off their universe. And for money too of course. But they got the best writers and artists to put it out. And a lot of things they did hurt *AS AN IMPORTANT PART OF MOVING THE STORY*.
Marvel on the other hand seems to like stunts and as you say Heidi, plots and behavior that don't fit the characters as we know them. I've been arguing that Marvel has been changing the characters and putting teams on the books that don't know the history, continuity or seem much to care. It's like when a new team takes over a classic like Star Trek. You end up with a franchise killer known as "Enterprise". The same thing could happen to Marvel and the Bendis/Quesada cabal...
And no, I don't like the best example of a marriage in super hero history being shredded for cold hard cash. I think it's deplorable and continue my boycott and anything do with the Civil War.... unless The Punisher ends it completely, the hard way...

Brett, that is cool that you are enjoying the story so far. I have to figure we all have our preferences in this. I think their arguement seems forced, but that is my opinion.

Reed is definitely the genius who is eccentric and needs a Sue in his life. What I don't understand is how she can NOT know about this whole Illuminati thing. From a personal history, I tell my husband everything, even if I don't always go into details.

I view Reed and Sue's conversation like this:

Reed- "Sue, I have to go to a meeting. It is pretty top secret, but I won't be in my lab so don't worry. Use the FF emergency communicator if you need me"

Sue- "Okay. I am glad you mentioned something. Have a nice night. I better ask Ben if he can watch the kids because I am speaking at a charity event."

That is kinda the gist of it. It may seem hokey, but it is where I feel it is at.

I am really hoping my "spider sense" is wrong and that they are just teasing us about a divorce type of thing. Unfortunately, I feel a split coming on despite it all.

Keep me informed how you think it is going as it comes about!

Carl, it has been a bit painful to see. Have you been keeping up with the stuff you haven't been getting through others? I am still buying FF and Amazing Spider-Man, but am about to quit.

Welp, it's been an odd few weeks so I have hardly been at the comic shop like usual. First there was the disruption by Superman Returns and I had to get birthday presents for my eldest daughter. So, I was pretty broke by new comics Wednesday. And frankly, seeing that red background and the white letters spelling out "Civil War" on all their covers makes me even avoid looking at them. Much less picking them up and reading them. I might look at the issue of Spiderman highlighting his supreme stupidity, but buy it? Never...

I figured you have been a busy man, Carl. It is just that I know that when you walk into the shop, at least one person is probably targeting you with their opinion. It is because you are so passionate!

Thanks for the good points!

Welp, the crowd lately has been either feast or famine. For Superman Returns, we had over 30 people show up, we had about 1 row and a half for our crew in the giant IMAX theatre. Mostly it's been the shop's own "civil war" of the people that loved Superman Returns vs. the Marvel Zombies, mostly on line at myspace.com. Some of the posts have gotten a bit heated to say the least. You can see them here if you wish. My posts are under the whimsical name of Beppo, The Super Monkey here:

On the FF sitch I haven't really had a chance to sit and talk comics, either I have been missing or most of the crew has been. Hopefully this Wednesday (No Comic Day) will be better. Or I guess I will have to go on Thursday on 'Delayed Comic Day' also...

I will be curious to see what the gang has to say...

Tomorrow I will get a pulse from my local shop and see what the word is. They haven't heard my Reed and Sue theory yet, so I have a gun full of ammo tomorrow! Heh!

BTW, I bookmarked your my space and I wander over there occasionally. I love what you did to the place, but especially love the Punisher pic in the comments.

I haven't been able to bring myself to join My Space yet because I keep doing stupid things like watching Dateline NBC and 20/20 news reports that scare me! Heh!! Someday...
