Random Thoughts and Musings

It is 4 p.m. on a Saturday and I am embarassed to admit that I have gotten only one thing out of several on my list done. To be frank, I was so sore and exhausted from pushing so hard at work and at the gym that I couldn't get out of bed. When I finally did get up, I wandered aimlessly around the house doing nothing of consequence other then getting a shower.

This was a clear signal to take today off from the gym. I have lost 13 pounds, hard earned by endless days in a row of punishment, so I figure my body needs a day to heal. Besides, you know you had a good lifting session when it hurts to lift a five pound bag at the grocery store after doing endless bicep curls with 15 pound weights. Yikes.

To try and catch up with my fellow bloggers, I did the rounds of my favorite sites and found that several of my friends here are making great points and bringing up interesting opinions that resonate well. To try and point these out, let me take a quick spin around the blogoverse and do a little link love.

Lisa at Sequentially Speaking has a great post about Hollywood hurting comics. She points out that Wonder Woman and Superman titles have been shuffled by the lateness of the creators that work in the film and television industry. We need creators that can get books done in a timely manner and we need them now.

Over at Shelly's Comic Book Shelf, the lady herself does several reviews I find myself agreeing with and shaking my head in glee to. Go see her brilliance for yourself.

Last night Loren went and saw Ghost Rider. I really enjoyed his opinions about the movie and wish I could have gone to see it with him. Head over to one diverse comic book nation and check it out.

Spencer Carnage at Of Course, Yeah! is having a contest to see who can turn in the best "Get Your Civil War on" comic strip. There are lots of excellent prizes. What are you waiting for? Go enter!

The worst cover ever (part 10) has been sighted over at Comic Coverage. I have to give Mark serious props for this gold mine of a find. It is too good to miss.

My personal hero Laura makes a major milestone and I am very proud of her. Not only is she doing a great series on Aquaman issues of old, she is also getting in great shape. My hat is off to Laura! Bloggity-Blog-Blog-Blog is her fun site.

My other hero of the day Bahlactus has a message for his fellow bloggers called Comic Bloggers, ASSEMBLE! Run, don't walk, over to his site to check it out. The man has spoken.

With so much comic book goodness going on around the internet, how can you not enjoy it? Go to these links and see what I am talking about.

Have a wonderful evening all! I am hoping to be back tomorrow with some reviews, including the newest issue of Green Arrow.

What's good Heidi? I can totally relate to where you're coming from on the workout hustle. I'm 7 weeks into my 4 or 5 days a week on the regular.

One thing I'm finding is that although the workout format is on point, my lifestyle hustle has suffered in terms of it's related routine. My written frequency has been down, my artistic adventures have been considerably slack, etc. It's taking all my mental faculties to get hyped about going to the gym the next morning.

It's all about balance, I think. Now that I'm 7 weeks in, and finally at this point where I mentally can only go 1 day before I have to get back to the gym..I can target the relevant lifestyle routines. Give that a rip too and see how it plays with your format for the positive. Be easy, Ms. Lady! Keep up the hustle!

Congrats on the weight loss. I could stand to lost fifteen or twenty pounds. The problem is that I would have to exercise or eat better and I just don't see either of those two happening.

I was supposed to go see Ghost Rider with friends last night but I didn't feel all that great so I bowed out. Plus what I've seen of it hasn't impressed me too much.

I don't know if you've seen them but I've put up a few prose pieces over at my site, I'd be interested in your opinion of them. (only if you like them of course...no, just joking, I can handle constructive criticism.)

Hope you're having a great weekend. Working through it here.

Bahlactus- It has been a good day today for the body and soul to recoup a bit of energy. I worked out for about an hour and a half today, and that was plenty, yet I am beating myself up for not doing a hardcore weight lifting session. I have to get back to a bit of self-love.

You are absolutely right that the workout format can keep the rest of life off balance. God knows, that is happening here. I am definitely using you as a workout partner of sorts, to keep the energy up. Thank you for the inspiration! You have been here for me, and I am very grateful. I am glad to see you are 7 weeks in and going strong.

I already posted a comment on Lisa's blog about this, but just to emphasize: I think it's as much or more the fault of the publisher when these outside writers mess up the schedule. Writing a single 22 page full comic script takes more time than people know...and that goes double for writers with established work habits from outside comics. It's a very restrictive medium in some ways -- so few pages! so little room for words! -- and outside writers may not realize this at first. The top writers who can do, say, four monthly books impress the hell out of me for their discipline, whether or not I like the finished product. Add to that comics writing money being crap and these writers needing to stick to their "bread and butter" work like movies or television or novels to support themselves, and it's just asking for this kind of trouble.

Publishers should recognize this and change their strategy. Writing in what we used to call "Marvel style" -- a plot synopsis without dialogue, broken down by the artist into pages and panels, then the art sent back to the writer for dialogue and captions -- is a LOT faster than full script. Maybe they could try that. Also (as I said to Lisa) putting them on standalone books and miniseries rather than ongoing monthly titles.

RAB- that is the unfortunate thing- most people don't know all that goes into producing a comic. We all hope that as any normal business, the scheduling and deadlines given are fair and acceptable. To see chronic problem producers still get a lot of work floors me.

I don't have any problem with fill-ins as long as they are quality. I quite enjoy them from time to time. God knows it would have helped Wonder Woman to have a "flashback" story of some sort to tide me over rather then waiting in silence with no explanation.

You make valid points, and I think it would be a great idea if someday a comic company would show a "production step-by-step" to educate readers.
