Captain America's Fate: Spoiled!!

How you might ask?

I am on West Coast time. I went on the internet to look up an address about 9:30 a.m. my time. The FIRST THING I saw on Yahoo.com was a story about Captain America's fate in issue #25 which was being released today. The headline spoiled it.

There was no warning or opportunity to un-see the article. It was the lead and it gave it all away.

I am pissed about this.

Evidently there was a big article in the New York Daily News that spoiled it for everyone that gets that particular paper. To top it off, AOL.com had a story about it on their lead screen.

I don't know if it was Marvel's PR department, or if the story was picked up randomly, but this obvious ploy to bring new readers of the non-comic book persuasion completely spoiled the whole damn issue for me. On top of it, Captain America #25 was $3.99, so I paid an extra dollar for the privilege.

Did anyone else get blindsided by this?

I did too. I was reading headlines on my home page and one of the stories from USA Today said: Captain America Dies. So I didn't have a choice to read the spoiler or not. And I'm not even going to go into the fact that if he is really dead I'm going to be mighty pissed.

Well, even without the Big Media spoilers, something bad was definitely telegraphed for Cap at the end of this...plus all of those solicits that talked about a significant death..not exactly a huge shocker.

Looks like Marvel's got their "Death of Superman" tidal wave they've been planning for....right down to the "perfect storm" of a slow news day.

Still, Joe Quesada's quotes irratated me...so I put together a little something.

Welp, stack the chairs up, roll up the carpets and turn off the lights. I am officially done with Marvel Comics. The end...

You know, I had decided to lift my mega-crossover embargo to check out the initial INITIATIVE crossovers...and I'm giving up on Marvel.

If it hadn't been spoiled to death, issue 25 might have been the beginning of a cool story. Now I *know* that Marvel has nothing but contempt for its fans.

Yeah, I think everyone did. My husband called me up and told me it was all over the mainstream news, and my first reaction was "might as well put it up on ComicMix, it's not like everybody won't have known about it."

Thats a great idea guy said...

Bah. The media did not blurt out.. "Hey, Dubledore buys it with this one." Nope, totally respect that one.

I recollect DC making a major news event prior to the "Death of Supes."

I blame this on the Sopranos.

It was already on Newsarama when I woke up at 6 am central time on Wednesday - so don't feel bad.

Were we blindsided - yes. I was getting ready for work and my husband saw the headline and suddenly I heard a shout of "AW CRAP!" So I came over to look. We both shook our heads and said, "We didn't order enough!"

John Holland said...

I just came back from my comic shop today and he was complaining about the fact that they (the comic shops) had no idea of this happening, so they didn't order for it. He said he normally orders around 4-5 copies of Cap. After the news broke he said he had over three dozen people call and ask if he had the comic and of course he didn't.

I can't blame the leak too much on Marvel. They kept it hidden until we were all surprised by it. So in that regards they are in a catch 22, should they have let the shop owners know and risk a leak, which is pretty likely, so they can order or have it be a surprise and than have all the shops scramble to get more copies?

Besides that I was pretty upset when I heard the news. To me that basically was coming down against Cap's side completely in the Civil War. Beat them and than kill their leader. I'm one of the few people that actually found Civil War interesting, I think they made some bad choices and some bad moves, but I liked the idea of the big change.

Than I read Avengers: Initative today and guess what? Cap isn't really dead. They have him hidden somewhere and are working on saving him. So I get his death as a spoiler and than his return as a spoiler.

Not a good way to do things I think.

John, I read both your comments and I am dang near speechless. This whole thing is an even bigger pooch screw then I thought.

It isn't so much the media attention as the fact that number one it was spoiled and number two it sounds like it isn't a done deal. Sheesh.

I am pissed about it being spoiled. If it is all a marketing ploy like I think it may be, that will just drive me up the wall!!

Heidi Meeley said...

Mark, nice post on your blog. I dang near did a spit take. Thank you for the link. I encourage everyone to go take a look!

Heidi Meeley said...

Carl, I figured this might be the last nail in the coffin for you. Yikes. I am so sorry!

Heidi Meeley said...

Gordon, I feel you on this one. The major spoiler and the obvious marketing agenda did me in.

I am getting less Marvel books now then I have in ten years.

Heidi Meeley said...

Elayne, at that point in time, it makes sense to put up a post. It sure made the rounds quickly with the national media so it is only fair that the comic sites have our say.

Scott, you do make a good point that book six of Harry Potter didn't get spoiled. I remember that it was pretty quiet and I appreciated having the luxury of reading the book and experiencing it without someone else telling me what was going to happen first.

Swinebread, you rule!

Heidi Meeley said...

Lisa, I feel for you. It had to be awful as a retailer to not have any warning. How awful. I was thinking about you wondering how it went.

Swinebread said...

Actually Heidi, you rule… I’m merely the jester in your court. :D

It's got nothing to do with east coast versus west coast timing. The spoiler was in the New York Daily News, which hits the streets in the wee hours of the morning. You were probably still watching Tuesday night network television when this hit the Manhattan streets. I heard it before 6 AM on a local radio station here in NYC.

Even better, Captain America # 25 is averaging $50 dollars (buy it now usually) on ebay...

Heidi Meeley said...

Swinebread, thank you for the kind words. It made my day!

Heidi Meeley said...

Bully, I was wondering if you got hit with it as well. It is not a surprise that the entire nation got the book spoiled for them, but a sad reality.

I am sorry it got spoiled for you as well!

Heidi Meeley said...

Carl, I saw that! My retailer has a huge waiting list at the shop for issues and she isn't happy about the surprise aspect of the whole deal either. Poor lady!

Carl said...

I'M FREE!!! At the shop I told my dealer Scott about my decision. He had this look and asked, "Even The Punisher?!!!" I said, yep, it's all got to go. But our past differences aside, he said he would secure a copy of CA#25 so I can at least read it...

Heidi Meeley said...

Carl, I respect your decision. It is to that point for sure. It is Marvel's loss.
