Superman Title Issues Shuffled; Countdown On Target

In interesting news around the internet, DC has announced issue scheduling changes on the Superman title. What this does is keep an issue coming out on a monthly basis, which I applaud. The bad news is that the fill-in issues mean that the current story arc is being delayed. Here is the news via Newsarama:

"UPCOMING SUPERMAN ISSUES GET NEW CONTENTS

Please note the following contents changes to upcoming issues of SUPERMAN:

SUPERMAN #660 (NOV060188) now will feature a story written by Kurt Busiek, with art by Mike Manley & Bret Blevins and a cover by James Fry & Rodney Ramos. This issue looks at someone who's popped in and out of SUPERMAN for months. Ever since "Up, Up and Away," he's made his presence known. Now, at long last, the story you demanded starring... The Prankster?! This issue is scheduled to arrive in stores on March 14.

SUPERMAN #661 (DEC060191) now will feature a story written by Kurt Busiek & Richard Howell, with art by Richard Howell & Eduardo Barreto and a cover by Jesus Merino. In it, an ancient and vicious curse set into motion by the Greek gods hits Metropolis, challenging Superman in a way he's never been challenged before. It'll take more than the Man of Steel to save the day this time. Enter: Wonder Woman! But even their combined power may not be enough to halt a curse older than time itself! This issue is scheduled to arrive in stores on March 28. Retailers may adjust orders on it through the Final Order Cutoff date of March 8.

SUPERMAN #662 (JAN070269) now will feature the start of the 5-part second half of "Camelot Falls," previous slated to appear in issue #661. This issue is written by Kurt Busiek with art and cover by Carlos Pacheco & Jesus Merino. This issue is scheduled to arrive in stores on April 11. Retailers may adjust orders on it through the Final Order Cutoff date of March 22.

SUPERMAN #663 (MAR070183) now will feature now will feature chapter two of the 5-part second half of "Camelot Falls," in which the Young Gods of New Genesis pay a visit to Metropolis, while the Prankster is on the loose and the threat of Arion looms over the city. This story was previous slated to appear in issue #662, and is written by Kurt Busiek with art and cover by Carlos Pacheco & Jesus Merino, as solicited in the March Previews (Volume XVII #3). This issue is scheduled to arrive in stores on May 9.

Because of these changes, SUPERMAN #660, 661 and 662 will be made returnable at a later date."

I don't so much mind the shift in content as I am puzzled as to why the story arc is running so far behind. With Kurt Busiek writing it, I am not sure what to think. I know that Busiek usually keeps a tight schedule with his "comic book company" books while lagging on his Astro City projects. Maybe it is an artistic issue? I am really curious about this.

In other news, the esteemed Rich Johnston is back home from the New York City Comicon and he has oodles of news. This particular piece of information caught my eye.

I understand there are two months worth of "Countdown" content completely finished, three months before the new weekly book starts to ship.

That is wonderful news! Since it is green-lighted in the Lying in the Gutters column, I feel great hearing that. DC has done a nice job on 52 and it looks like Countdown will be no different. Yay!

Those are the pieces of news that really caught my eye tonight- both for completely different reasons. What do you think of the content change? Are you planning to pick up Countdown?

Have a wonderful evening!

Happy Tonight!

I just weighed myself at the gym and I finally lost more weight. My total weight loss is 17 1/2 pounds and I am so pleased that I can hardly stand it. These last couple of pounds have been hard to lose, so it feels extra gratifying.

Now if I could just lose a couple more and hit the magic "20" mark. You know I am not stopping now! My goal for the 12 week contest is a total weight loss of 30 pounds, and I am tracking pretty closely as tomorrow is the 7 week mark. It would be really nice to go to Emerald City Comicon at that weight, feeling slimmer and trimmer.

That's it for tonight. I was just so happy I had to share!

Have a great evening!

Quick Take Reviews for February 25

The Brave & the Bold 1

Wonder Woman #4- NOT WORTH THE WAIT. Pretty. Interesting. Hardly Mind blowing. Does the writer think he farts daisies that he can take this long? Thank God they have pushed him aside and are carrying on. Let the end of this be a special. Grade: C-.

Checkmate #11: A worthwhile look at Fire’s back story. The excellent story telling on this book has kept be baited at the hook, and continues to do so. Having noteworthy and surprising characters take on high end roles in Checkmate has really revved my interest in the DCU. Grade: B.

Powers #23: Can we just get to the climax of this story already? This latest story arc, and in fact this reboot of Powers as a whole has felt like it is dragging. I love the lead characters and the universe that Brian Michael Bendis has built so I am patiently awaiting the big pay off, BUT IT HAD BETTER COME SOON. Michael Avon Oeming does his usual masterpiece of a job on the art, so I try to be calm. Grade: B-.

The Brave & the Bold #1: The book I had to buy for George Perez’ masterpiece art. I wasn’t disappointed, and in fact am quite pleased that I picked it up. The storytelling by Mark Waid is excellent, and the cohesiveness of the creative team warms my heart. This is a quality new title. Grade: A.

Silent War #2 (of 6): The Inhumans are pissed so they are going to war with the United States. Just what the country needs with that whole Civil War nonsense going on, right? The interplay between crazy Pietro, the US government, and the Inhumans makes the book worth picking up. The art is pretty decent too. I would rather follow this tale then Civil War any day. Grade: B.

Girls #22: The madness ensues as Girls speeds towards its final issue #24. These people’s lives have been shattered, and the Luna Brothers haven’t blinked yet. For a wonderfully creepy look at what happens when strange nude girls come to town, this is the book to read. It is definitely horror at it’s finest. I want to look away but find that I can’t. Grade: B+.

Random Thoughts and Musings

Well, it finally happened. We saw Ghost Rider. Yay!

Jim and I liked the movie for what it was- high camp with comic book fun thrown in. One thing we both noticed was that we never saw Stan Lee. Isn't he supposed to make appearances in EVERY Marvel movie? Otherwise, we enjoyed the movie quite a bit and are pretty sure it will be a DVD "must have".

I am really cheering the news that MANHUNTER IS BACK. I love that book and have been really unhappy about it's demise. That is the best news I have heard so far from the New York Con.

Other interesting news is that Wonder Woman will be on schedule other then the fact that we will have no idea how the hell this current story arc ends until DC releases an extra sized special that does so. While being very happy about the book being back on a regular basis, I have no idea how DC is going to pull this off. Aren't we going to be confused for awhile until Heinberg decides to turn in the last of the story so the Dodson's can do the art? This I have got to see to believe.

In sad news, there is no way Jim and I can go to the Seattle ComiCard Show tomorrow. It has been snowing like crazy all day today and it is a chains mandatory ruling over the hill. I hate to be a wimp, but there is no way my nerves can handle a trip that could go badly very quickly because of poor weather. We will just have to wait and see you all at the Emerald City show.

If anyone does go to the Seattle show tomorrow, please let me know how it goes. We hate the fact that we will not be there.

No further news other then the weather being bad. I am going to monitor the New York con panels for news and try and get caught up on housework.

You all take care! Have a great night!

Entertainment Television... One Year Later

Britney & Paris
Originally uploaded by Heidi Meeley.
Last night after damn near losing my mind ranting about Britney Spears and her strange behavior, something in the bigger picture crossed my mind.

In the past I always watched E! News for information on upcoming movies and television shows. I also enjoyed the profiles they would do on actors and creators. It was fluff to a point, but it was informative.

Now I turn on E! News and the first ten minutes are all about the drama. What happened to talking about upcoming projects that really are entertainment? When did it all turn into gossip central?

I can't stand it!

Here is my example of a half hour show back in the day:

1. Open with a breaking story- maybe a marriage or a death... some kind of passage.
2. Interview and scoop on upcoming movie. Example: Hugh Jackman talks about X3 and there are brief montages from the set. Various blurbs and trailer ensue.
3. Television shows are highlighted. We hear about what is on tonight and through out the week. Nielson ratings and casting are discussed.
4, Personality profile on an up and comer.
5. Sneak peek on upcoming movie.
6. Discussion of upcoming album from artist of note. Mention of break-through sales of week.
7. Back to host for a brief time capsule of the week or a year ago.
8. Fashion highlight
9. Show ends.

A Show NOW:

1. Star A dies of weird causes, everybody gossips.
2. Star B goes to rehab. Talk of career in toilet.
3. Star C shows their crotch. Lots of joking ensues.
4. Star D is suing about release of sex tape made while drunk a couple of years ago.
5. Star E is in lawsuit for not showing up to work.
6. Brief talk about American Idol or Dancing with the Stars.
7. Star F died- legendary talent is barely mentioned.
8. Back to Star A's strange death- much more gossip.
9. A look at what's in the tabloids.
10. Who showed nipple "accidently" today.
11. Two minutes about some random movie.
12. One minute about some random television show.
13. Last minute breaking news about Star B in rehab.
14. Dishing star's outfits and calling them trash.
15. The end.

Yikes. What a difference. No wonder I can't relax when I get home and watch entertainment news anymore. It used to be I would get to see a trailer for an upcoming movie I wanted to see and learn more about it's creation. Now I learn about who forgot to wear underwear.

No wonder society is going to hell in a hand basket. If our children are looking to the two women pictured as role models we have a huge problem on our hands.

Obviously it is time to change the channel and find something new to do while unwinding from a long day at work. Maybe I should sharpen knives or do something similar that is less harmful to my mental health!

Britney Spears: I Can't Take it Anymore!

Save this woman!
Originally uploaded by Heidi Meeley.
Tonight I got home and proceeded to watch E! News while eating dinner. Once again, the rudderless Britney Spears was the opening story. Evidently she checked out of her second try at rehab in a week.

Yikes.

I can't take it anymore!

Will someone that knows this girl help her for God's sake? I keep having visions of her becoming the next Anna Nicole Smith, and that is horrible. Britney has two little boys at home and by God she needs to act like it.

Obviously this isn't comic book related, but I just can't stand it anymore. Britney has lost her mind for all of us to see and what do we do? We chase her around outside the rehab facility so we can get a picture of her. Isn't it time to leave her alone??

I don't want have a day-by-day take on her misery. I want her to go somewhere quiet and heal her mind. God knows she needs it.

Hey Britney, we have a lot of places to get lost in the Yakima Valley. Move your sorry butt up here and get your act together. Don't become a statistic - it isn't all it's cracked up to be.

This woman needs a lot of help and a great deal of prayer. I am crossing my fingers that she shapes up and gets it and that we can move on to hearing about upcoming movies and music instead of celebrity drama.

52 Week 42: A Fantastic Read

52 Week 42: A Fantastic Read
Originally uploaded by Heidi Meeley.
Wow. I just got done reading 52 Week 42 and it is absolutely amazing. How do I talk about it without spoiling it? Very carefully...

Issue 42 focuses on the helm of Fate and gives Ralph Dibny the opportunity of a lifetime. Boy does he take it. I have never been fonder and more emotional towards the character of Elongated Man then I am now. Unfortunately it took breaking up a perfect union and a long journey to get to this point, but the ride was worth the price of admission.

All the cynics out there who have been unhappy with 52 need to check this issue out. Featuring beautiful art by Darick Robertson, the book is pure entertainment.

I know this is a quick one, but I really wanted to put out there that 52 Week 42 is not to be missed. Go pick that sucker up and give it a read, already!

Random Musings and Linkage

Hey there! I am running late tonight because my "Get In Shape" team had a meeting to see how we were all doing at the six week mark. We are all very happy with our individual and team progress, and are hoping to win the contest. I will keep you posted.

Over at Atomic Romance, Swinebread has an insightful and totally clued-in take on the Portland Comic Book Show that took place last Sunday. Go over and take a gander, it is fun and candid.

Courtesy of blog@Newsarama, I have found an even more candid site. It is called Dick Hates Your Blog. Holy Crap. This fella calls it like he sees it, and I am intrigued and scared at the same time. I plan to follow his posting regularly if for no other reason then to pray that he doesn't take me out. Heh.

That is it for tonight. Short and sweet. My stomach is growling like there is no tomorrow so I am out of here! Take care!

New Comics for February 21

Well heck. I wanted to use an image, but my flickr account is telling me it is "having a massage" so that is out the window. Maybe tomorrow I can post a picture or two.

The list for this week is larger then I would like, so I am trying to pare it down to less. Some of the books I am opting not to get may be controversial to you, and I don't mind hearing about it. Unfortunately, it is down to a choice of good or better, so there are some quality books I am not able to get.

Let's get to the list of what I am picking up...

52 Week 42
Birds of Prey #103
Catwoman #64
Checkmate #11
Helmet of Fate Black Alice #1
Ion #11 (of 12)
Wonder Woman #4
Girls #22
Invincible #39
Hellstorm Son of Satan #5 (of 5)
Immortal Iron Fist #3
Powers #23
She-Hulk 2 #16
Silent War #2 (of 6)

On my maybe or dropped list
Brave and Bold #1 - this will depend on if I can't overcome my George Perez art lust.
Hellblazer #229- I think it is the start of a new arc, so it is a perfect dropping point
Robin #159- I like this book, so I am really torn.
Shadowpact #10- same thing, I like the book, but I like Checkmate better. Choices, choices.
Superman #659- This one is actually a pretty easy choice because of irregular shipping.
Punisher War Journal #4- I am really on the fence about this book. I like it but I also like She-Hulk. If the "agent of shield" arc there leaves me cold, I will get this book instead.

In related news, Civil War #7 and Amazing Spider-Man #528 are coming out this week, so we should find out if it is Mary Jane or Aunt May or both who dies... hmmmm. Crap, I hope I haven't spoiled any speculation- not my intention.

That's it for tonight! I have to go cook some protein before it gets too late to eat. Have a great night!

Checking In... But Not Seeing Ghost Rider

Well, it is bummer time here at Comics Fairplay. Jim and I tried to go see Ghost Rider today and the show was sold out. Our crappy local movie theatre only put the movie on one screen, and then they put it in the oldest theatre. Because tomorrow is a holiday, evidently everyone decided to go see it.

I don't have tomorrow off so we won't see it until this weekend. Sigh.

The good news is that because we didn't go see Ghost Rider, I was able to do a few reviews, featured below. I got to read some comics and pay bills, which was not as much fun. It's got to be done, right?

My biggest irritation right now is DC pushing back the end of the Allan Heinberg Wonder Woman story in issue #5 and having a fill in. I get so pissed thinking about it that I am trying not to. Right now I think that Heinberg and DC suck big time. Not very eloquent, but that it the honest truth.

Have a wonderful Monday off if you have it. I am jealous, but pleased for you! Take care!

Quick Take Reviews for February 18

Batman #663
Originally uploaded by

Justice Society of America #3: The latest reincarnation of the JSA continues to capture my interest. I am intrigued if for no other reason then to find out how the saga here ties into the end of 52. I appreciated Dale Eaglesham and Ruy Jose’s art and would like to note that Liberty Belle’s pants seem appropriately baggy in case there were any naysayer’s out there wondering. Heh. Justice Society is near the top of my stack once again, so it earns a grade of B+.

Manhunter #28: I love this book so much and I am so sad to see it going away. As Kate and Wonder Woman delve deeper into the mystery surrounding Blue Beetle, Batman makes a fantastic appearance that really seals the deal. Once again, I have to point out the art here. Javier Pina and Robin Riggs are a great team, and the book looks fantastic. Why can’t DC cancel some crappy book and leave my girl alone? Grade: A.

Stormwatch PHD #4: Easily my favorite Wildstorm reboot, Christos Gage and Doug Mahnke have really captured the essence of the characters while pacing the book perfectly. I love the extra touches that the creative team uses, and the “girl’s night out” was excellent. This book is a dream read. Grade: A.

The Punisher Presents Barracuda #1 (of 5): The best new character to come out of a Punisher book captures my attention with a take-no-prisoners mini-series. Barracuda is so unlikable that he almost becomes a sympathetic character. Only Garth Ennis could write a script like this. I was shocked, appalled, and intrigued, all at the same time. Grade: B.

Green Arrow #71: Yep, I picked it up. Hell, it had Batman and Red Hood guest starring and it was the middle of the story arc, so I spent the extra $2.99. I didn’t love it though. Having Batman and GA square off against the other’s foes was a clever idea, but I want to see the focus of the book get back to the main character. Not Speedy. Not Connor. Not special guest stars. I want to read about Oliver Queen. Until the focus gets back to him, I am just not that interested. Grade: C.

Batman #663: I opened up a comic book an instead found a novella. Yikes. After the week I had I just couldn’t read it. Too many small letters and not enough energy was the problem. I read it today and it was alright, but it wasn’t what I was expecting. I wanted to read a comic book, dammit. I love Grant Morrison, but I wasn’t excited about this at all. Grade: C-.

Random Thoughts and Musings

It is 4 p.m. on a Saturday and I am embarassed to admit that I have gotten only one thing out of several on my list done. To be frank, I was so sore and exhausted from pushing so hard at work and at the gym that I couldn't get out of bed. When I finally did get up, I wandered aimlessly around the house doing nothing of consequence other then getting a shower.

This was a clear signal to take today off from the gym. I have lost 13 pounds, hard earned by endless days in a row of punishment, so I figure my body needs a day to heal. Besides, you know you had a good lifting session when it hurts to lift a five pound bag at the grocery store after doing endless bicep curls with 15 pound weights. Yikes.

To try and catch up with my fellow bloggers, I did the rounds of my favorite sites and found that several of my friends here are making great points and bringing up interesting opinions that resonate well. To try and point these out, let me take a quick spin around the blogoverse and do a little link love.

Lisa at Sequentially Speaking has a great post about Hollywood hurting comics. She points out that Wonder Woman and Superman titles have been shuffled by the lateness of the creators that work in the film and television industry. We need creators that can get books done in a timely manner and we need them now.

Over at Shelly's Comic Book Shelf, the lady herself does several reviews I find myself agreeing with and shaking my head in glee to. Go see her brilliance for yourself.

Last night Loren went and saw Ghost Rider. I really enjoyed his opinions about the movie and wish I could have gone to see it with him. Head over to one diverse comic book nation and check it out.

Spencer Carnage at Of Course, Yeah! is having a contest to see who can turn in the best "Get Your Civil War on" comic strip. There are lots of excellent prizes. What are you waiting for? Go enter!

The worst cover ever (part 10) has been sighted over at Comic Coverage. I have to give Mark serious props for this gold mine of a find. It is too good to miss.

My personal hero Laura makes a major milestone and I am very proud of her. Not only is she doing a great series on Aquaman issues of old, she is also getting in great shape. My hat is off to Laura! Bloggity-Blog-Blog-Blog is her fun site.

My other hero of the day Bahlactus has a message for his fellow bloggers called Comic Bloggers, ASSEMBLE! Run, don't walk, over to his site to check it out. The man has spoken.

With so much comic book goodness going on around the internet, how can you not enjoy it? Go to these links and see what I am talking about.

Have a wonderful evening all! I am hoping to be back tomorrow with some reviews, including the newest issue of Green Arrow.

Portland Comic Show is Sunday!

After cancelling their show last fall, the Portland Comic Book Show is officially on for this Sunday, February 18. It is being held at Memorial Coliseum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guests include:

Matthew Clark
Michael Eury
Joelle Jones
Andy Mangels
Paul Tobin
Daniel Cooney
Darren G. Davis
David Hahn
Karl Kesel
Michael A. Martin
Colleen Coover
Randy Emberlin
Brandon Jerwa
Aaron Lopresti
Jamie S. Rich

It sounds like it should be a great show. I really wish Jim and I could attend, but unfortunately, we are having budgetary constraints that are only allowing us to attend one show this spring. Since we have a booth at Emerald City, that is where we will go. If but for a windfall I would be at this show in a heartbeat. There are always quality dealers and a fun atmosphere.

If you are going to be in Portland, make sure and stop by the show. Let me know how it goes!

Is This Gratuitous? Witchblade #104 Cover

Witchblade 104 Cover
Originally uploaded by Heidi Meeley.
I was reading an article on the Witchblade series over at Newsarama when I stumbled upon this cover for issue #104. My first thought was that it is an homage to the first issue cover. My second was that she seems to have a lot of junk in the trunk- wowee!

It just almost seems too easy, but I have to ask.... is this an homage or is it gratuitous? Or was it gratuitous in the first place?

With the Witchblade choosing a new bearer, it seems in order that the new would pay tribute to the old, so I don't find that odd at all. What I probably would have preferred is a close up of her face and the witchblade.

I tried to find out who the artist is on this quite interesting cover, but to no avail. Does anyone know who drew it so I can give credit?

Okay, here we go... is this gratuitous?

Happy Valentine's Day!

Jim and I celebrated Valentine's Day quietly, with e-cards and it was perfect. We have pretty much decided to go see Ghost Rider this weekend as our official celebration, so today was low key.

At work it was very surprising that only one person got flowers. I guess everyone else had the same idea we had. Normally it is a pretty competitive flower receiving environment- I liken it to Super Bowl for the ladies, no offense. It was a refreshing change to just lay low and work.

On a crappy note, our comics didn't come in today. We aren't going to receive them until Friday. Evidently the lovely weather didn't help things. For whatever reason I am not very upset about it. I guess it gives me a few extra days to think about more stuff to drop or consider picking up another one or two.

How about all of you? Any special plans? Did anything fun happen? Any particularly romantic moments that weren't too X-rated to share?

I want to just take a moment to wish you all a wonderful Valentine's Day. Enjoy!

New Comics for February 14

Stormwatch PHD 4
Originally uploaded by Heidi Meeley.

This week's list has a great deal of good stuff. The bad news is that I won't be getting it all. It is now a case of "buy the best of the best" here at Casa Meeley, so bear with me.

Here is the list of what I am getting:

52 Week 41
Batman #663
Justice Society of America #3
Manhunter #28
Stormwatch PHD #4 (pictured)
Tales of the Unexpected #5 (of 8)
Trials of Shazam #5 (of 12)
Y The Last Man #54
PVP #31
Astonishing X-Men #20
New X-Men #35
Thunderbolts #111
Ultimate X-Men #79- probably my last
Wolverine Origins #11

Books I am Dropping
Gen 13 #5- not because I don't like it but because I like other books better.
Green Arrow #71- mostly due to a slip in my enjoyment of it.
Exiles #91- Ditto what I said about Gen 13.

Ultimate X-Men and Astonishing X-Men are on the chopping block to make room for other books. Based on this current issue, I will be making a decision.

That's it for tonight. I am looking forward to more regular posting for the rest of the week. Thank you for bearing with me through all my unexpected "life" issues.

No List Tonight...

I tried to see what was on the Diamond List this week, but they didn't have the shipping lists available, so that has to wait until tomorrow night. Sorry about that!

Have a great evening!

Quick Check In

Crap. I missed three days in a row. I didn't mean to, but life got in the way.

Thursday and Friday were my company's sales meeting/trade show and I knew I would miss Thursday for sure. I just didnt' know that we would have a surprise on Friday morning that would make me miss that day and Saturday as well.

I woke up at 5:30 a.m. to find a leak in the ceiling by our washer and dryer. Rather then ignore it, I woke Jim up and showed him. Since Jim was home all day, I was hoping we could get someone in to look at it. A co-worker gave me a number to call, and the guy never called us back, so Jim called several numbers in the phone book and never got a live body.

Needless to say, my dad and mom came up Saturday and saved the day. They drove all the way from Oregon and Dad and Jim climbed on the roof and figured out what the problem was. A bit of repair and caulking later, and our roof is no longer leaking and the attic is dry. I just have to thank my parents prefusely for that. It was a huge favor that saved us big money and a great deal of worry.

Jim and I cleaned out part of our basement and garage Friday night and Saturday so we were quite busy. My parents gave us some valuable tips and we were able to free up quite a bit of space in both.

At any rate, I haven't even thought about comic books or the internet all weekend. Weird. I have no idea what is going on in the blogosphere and feel a bit lost here, but I definitely wanted to check in. Life carried on without technology, and it felt kind of good, though I am starting to experience some withdrawals. Hee hee.

Tomorrow night I will be back to answer comments and be back on schedule. Thank you for bearing with me. I know that all of you are very busy as well, and hope that life is treating you right.

Take care!

Yippee! Dynamite Entertainment Picks Up The Boys

Over at Newsarama there is an article that absolutely makes my day. It is as follows:

"Newsarama has learned that Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's The Boys will return to print shortly, this time, under the Dynamite Entertainment banner.

According to sources, Ennis and Robertson were contacted by many publishers when the
news broke that their creator-owned series would no longer be published by Wildstorm, and at the end of the day, the best deal was struck with Dynamite. DC Comics, of which Wildstorm is an imprint, has apparently released the property to the creators, which will allow them to take it to the new home. Finally, Robertson, while exclusive to DC Comics, has already said that his contract allows him to pursue creator-owned work, which will include The Boys at its new home.

When reached for comment, Dynamite's Nick Barrucci told Newsarama:

"The Boys are at Dynamite. We are putting together our plans, and will give more information as soon as possible. In addition to Garth and Darick, I would like to thank DC Comics and everyone at Wildstorm Comics who helped to make the transition a smooth one for Garth and Darick. I also want to thank the fans who so vocally made their support known over the last few weeks and I ask them to stay tuned for news on the continuation. I promise it will be worth the wait, as Garth and Darick continue to deliver their vision of The Boys.

"Judging from the latest sales numbers, after the move and if its DC numbers hold relatively steady, The Boys will be one of Dynamite's best-selling titles, as December's issue #6, Wildstorm's final issue, sold an estimated 27,000 copies, which is in the same ballpark as Dynamite's Red Sonja. Ennis and Robertsoin have said that they plan for the series to run roughly 60 issues - approximately five years.

No word was given on when Dynamite expects to resume publication of the series, or release the first trade paperback, which had already been solicited by Wildstorm. Dynamite did confirm for Newsarama that it will keep the cover price of The Boys at $2.99."

This is excellent news for fans of The Boys. I am thrilled to hear this, as I have been quite impressed with Dynamite Entertainment's overall quality and diversity. The Boys will fit in well there, and I look forward to purchasing the remainder of the run there.

Is This Gratuitous? Cover of Red Sonja #19

This week the picture in question is the cover of Red Sonja #19 by Adriano Batista. It is one of four covers available this week for the issue. Obviously Red Sonja is always right on the border line of taste due to her sexy chain mail bikini, but what caught my eye was the very graphic beheading pictured here, so I guess we are going for gratuitous violence this week.

I can tell you right now that if this comic cover showed up in my comic shop it would immediately be stowed behind the counter, no questions asked. Consumers would have to specifically request it to get their hands on it for sure. Yikes.

My jaded eye is a bit surprised at the graphic nature of the violence being portrayed, but I am not really offended. I am simply shocked at the rage behind the beheading, and didn't expect a cover like this.

While I ponder this a bit more, I would like to hear your opinion.

Is this gratuitous?

New Comics for February 7

Detective Comics 828

It was definitely a Monday in my little world today. The words "hectic" and "stressful" come to mind. I guess the good news is that I made it, and keep plugging away. I only worked out for an hour tonight because I had to get bills paid. Hopefully since I haven't had a day off for over a week it won't hurt anything.

This week in comics is quite a conundrum. I am trying to make a plan to drop more titles, so bear with me. Last week was weird. I didn't pick up a few books and our bill was lighter, but it was strange to walk out without them. I guess it is withdrawals.

Here is the list:

52 Week 40
Action Comics Annual #10- we might not get because of the higher price...
Detective Comics #838 (pictured)
Helmet of Fate: Sargon the Sorcerer #1
Jonah Hex #16- my last issue (I special ordered)
Loveless #15 - my last issue ( I special ordered)
Nightwing #129
Outsiders #45- on the chopping block
Supergirl #14
Welcome to Tranquililty #3
Ms Marvel #12
Punisher #44
Ultimate Spider-Man #105
Uncanny X-Men #483
X-23 Target X #3 (of 6)
X-Men Phoenix Warsong #5 (of 5) -late last issue of mini-series... Yay!
Lone Ranger #4
Red Sonja #19

DROPPED
Astro City The Dark Age Book 2 #2 - this book has been really late. If I decide to get it later, I will do so in trade format.
Midnighter #4- I am just not feeling this book, so it is gone.
X-Men Annual #1- I was thinking about getting it, but the price scared me off.

That is three more titles dropped, and a few more that it will be my last issue on out of respect to the shop owners who special order the book for me.

Have a wonderful evening! I hope your week is filled with joy and happiness!

Quick Take Reviews and a Few Musings

Teen Titans 43

Here at Casa Meeley we just got done watching the Super Bowl. Though I do not claim to be a regular football viewer, the post-season this year has fascinated me. Watching today's game was sheer fun, and I found myself rooting for the Colts from minute one. Everything really gelled for them, so I have to give them props. I am still a bit sad that the Seahawks weren't able to make it back this year, but it really was a great day in football today.

I haven't done any reviews lately because I have been so far behind on my reading. In trying to rectify this, let me present a brief take on some of this week's titles.

Teen Titans #43 (pictured)- The Teen Titans East is an interesting concept, but that was really lost to me when I figured out what the deal with Batgirl has been. Holy crap. How are they going to explain out of this one? Is Robin going to have a chance to make things right? Since this is Geoff Johns' last story arc, it should be all out bloody battle to the finish. The art didn't impress me much, but I think the gratuitous shot of Raven didn't inspire a lot of confidence here. Grade: B.

Deathblow #3- This title continues to intrigue me. Cray has been through the ringer and it is hard to distinguish fantasy from reality. Witnessing his crack-up is a bit hard to take, but strangely compelling at the same time. For pure fascination level this book gets an A from me.

Ion #10 (of 12)- Since getting past the slow paced first story arc, Ion has really hit the right notes for me. I am still unhappy with the art, but am really enjoying the story. Having the Tangent universe come in was a nice touch. Next issue features Donna Troy so I am really thrilled. Grade: B.

American Virgin #11- I am really entranced by the lead character of American Virgin. Adam has been through so much, yet still clings to his core values. From dealing with the horrific death of his girlfriend to being exposed to a life he has been sheltered from, he has come through changed but unbroken. How Adam fares in this next story arc is anyone's guess, but I know I will be along for the ride. Grade: B+.

Hunter Killer #11- This book has been a mixed one for me. It has been hard to follow at first because of missed deadlines. Now it is really starting to cook for me, but I am not sure if 12 is the final issue or not, so I am a bit confused. Once Top Cow faced the fact that Marc SIlvestri couldn't get the book drawn, things really turned around. It is all about having to go back and dig out the first four or five issues to get re-acclimated. Mark Waid's scripting has been on point and that has been the strong point for me. Grade: C+.

That is it tonight. It is almost 8 p.m. so it is time to go start getting ready for the work week and relax after being so pumped during the big game.

Have a great evening!

Random Thoughts and Musings

After being a non-presence on the internet, it just came to my attention via The Beat that Joss Whedon is off the Wonder Woman movie. This is nothing but a relief to me. Not that I am hating on Whedon, but that I just have no desire to see some Hollywood bimbette try and recreate the greatness that was Lynda Carter on the television show. Wonder Woman is a sacred character to me, and I know it will make me lose my mind if Lindsey Lohan or one of her ilk shows up starring in the film.

The only way I can take a Wonder Woman film is if there is an unknown cast that looks and acts like the Amazon Princess. It worked for Lynda Carter, and her legacy endures to this day. God knows how many men she put through puberty and how many little girls she inspired.

If a Wonder Woman movie never sees the light of day it is fine with me. I would rather go without then see her sullied by the Hollywood movie machine.

Emerald City Comicon has it's hotel information up now. I checked out all my options and went for one not on the list. I booked our reservations at the same hotel we stayed at last year, and am hoping it was the right decision.

I am having a booth there and am really excited about it. It is all about my blog, so that is something different then what everyone else is doing. The only problem is when people come up to the booth and ask what I produce. I am reduced to saying "a daily blog about comic book events and series" and look blankly. Sigh. I really have got to get an angle there.

Are any of you fellow bloggers attending the ECCC? If so, e-mail me and maybe we can have an afternoon get together on Saturday or Sunday. I would love to meet you and hang out.

I am obsessing on the Papa Roach song "Forever" and the rock ballad "It's Not Over" by Daughtry. "Walk" by Pantera also has an almost permanent spot on chronic rotation on my iPod. I think my co-workers are a bit scared, and my husband just shakes his head, but rock is my thing right now. It's got to be the workouts... or maybe it could be I've always been a rocker but can't bother hiding it anymore.

Being a rocker can be a bit like being a comic book reader. It is easy to stay in the closet, but it feels a lot better to be out there, loud and proud. I just can't pretend anymore.

That is it for tonight. I am going to go collapse now. I haven't took a day off working out all week and I am exhausted and sore. On the agenda is some reading and VH1's Classic Channel "Metal Mania" later on. Heh.

Seattle Comicard Show: February 25

I just realized that on February 25 there will be a comic show in Seattle. It is the Seattle Comicard Show, an intimate event that always features quality guests and excellent selection of product.

Guests include:

Ben Hansen - artist, Dark Powers
Chris Anderson - artist, Void Xanadu
Greg Dent - writer, Void Xanadu
Rick Hobert - artist, Winter Soldier and Batman Family
Stefano Gaudiano - artist, Winter Soldier, Batman Family, and Daredevil

Also, QEW Publishing will be there doing portfolio reviews and having a presence.

I am really excited about this. I just don't know if we are going to make it over there or not. I would love to see Ben, who I was fortunate enough to do a Q&A with last week. Also, it is always heaven to see Quenton and the gang.

The convention is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m at the Rainier Room at the Seattle Center. Are any of you planning to attend?

Strangers in Paradise #87: It All Comes Together

After being underwhelmed by the last half dozen issues of Strangers in Paradise, I was prepared to collect the final few and watch it all end softly. I figured I had it all worked out and that writer/artist Terry Moore was phoning it in, so to speak.

I was wrong.

Issue #87 shocked the hell out of me. It made me gasp, and it made me think. There were spoilers galore and the revelations were very surprising. I won't reveal it all here because I want you to read it for yourself. It is worth the $2.99 and the time spent reading it.

I have to apologize to Moore because I doubted him. I was feeling pretty jaded, even though a major character died. I was expecting it, along with Francine's decision. It all seemed too certain and easy.

Now Moore came along and kicked us all in the butt with shock after shock.

All I can say is "I am so sorry" and "thank you for the great read". I am looking forward to the final few issues with a whole new appreciation for the story being told.

Wizard Boycott: Liefeld Must Go!

Liefeld art
Originally uploaded by Heidi Meeley.
This week my hubby and I went and picked up this month's Wizard Magazine. We both usually page through it with great humor and a grain of salt. Unfortunately, once again I had to be very disapointed.

Rob Liefeld is number 8 on the list of top ten artists.

What the hell is that all about?

Does Wizard have an under-the-table arrangement with the perpetually late Levi's poster boy?? Does some random fanboy get free sketches to put him on there?

After reading that Liefeld is running late on his Onslaught Reborn mini-series, it seems odd to see him laden with praise of that merit. Not that Wizard's list isn't one big bunch of bulls**t anyway, but this is the final nail in the coffin.

Wizard is officially a big fat joke to me now.

Until there is new management in place and the magazine gets decent again, I am done. Join with me to boycott this piece of crap until there is a new system in place.
