Quick Shot Reviews

Identity Crisis #6 (of 7): Well, we find out who the killer is in this issue. Somehow the way it goes down is startlingly anticlimatic, so I am really hoping for issue 7 to slam things home. I have read Brad Meltzer's novels and think he is an excellent writer, so I am keeping the faith that he is going to pull out all the stops for us readers. Also, he is a longtime JLA fan, so I am taking into consideration that he won't beat the crap out of continuity. As to why the person who is taking lives did this, God only knows.

JSA #67: An Identity Crisis tie in that finds Mr. Terrific and Doctor Midnite doing Sue Dibny's autopsy while the rest of the team reflects on their personal lives. I especially enjoyed the Power Girl-Superman interlude. I have to give Geoff Johns a great deal of credit for rejuvenating the Justice Society while holding them true to their roots. This is a must read book month after month for me.

Avengers Finale: This issue took the sting out of Avengers #503 for me. I was pissed last week after reading it, and this book gave me a sense of closure. Though I am not thrilled with the deaths of Hawkeye and Antman, and am iritated by Scarlet Witch's transformation, I am willing to try and trust Brian Michael Bendis to make things interesting. I wouldn't be as open to the idea of rebooting the team if Bendis wasn't on board.

Nightwing #99: Dick Grayson learns the end results of War Games and is less then thrilled to say the least. The high emotional tone of the issue keeps it from becoming just another recap. I am really looking forward to issue 100 to see resolution of the Tarantula/Nightwing relationship. I am also crossing my fingers that Dick doesn't bite it somehow in Identity Crisis or his 100th issue so I can continue to follow his adventures for years to come.

Those are the comics I have read twice. I hope to reread several more tonight so I can come back with more reviews. Have a great night!

Welp, I've had a time getting back here. First, we had to go up north for my bride's medical situtation. All is well. We had the internet but her bookmarks, not mine. Anyway, what I have read lately:

Identity Crisis #6: Welp, I have a time believing it. I am thinking someone is using mind-control or setting that person up. And it's got a funky feel to it. It went on with this ring of doom for the DC Universe being home and the din has gotten louder this issue...

Green Lantern: Rebirth #1: Hmmmm, had to say, I wanted to like this a lot more. I guess I have always been annoyed by the post-Crisis revision of Hal Jordan, that he was a hothead and unstable. Funny, I never saw that in the pre-Crisis stories. I did like Jon Stewart in Batman's face, that was great...

Avengers #500-Finale: Welp, I have to say, overall, I didn't like this. The "shake'em up and kill people" to change the book seems like a dirty trick. I always liked The Vision and Scarlet Witch and now.... I will never look at the book the same. I doubt I will buy New Avengers past the first issue. And come on, Wolverine?

Bullseye's Greatest Hits #1-#3: Omg, you have to get this series! It's twisted, funny and raw but it's a great "secret origin" story! I would love to see him get his own series if this team did it...

Walking Dead #13: Welp, I love this book, but this was more of a talking issue, get all the emotions of the characters vented and get them back on the road. Exposition but not much action. So, this is the beginning of the new story arc.

Barbara's Zombie Chronicles #1 & #2: This series had kind of a fan-published book, but it's pretty good. It's about Barbara of the 1969 "Night of the Living Dead" movie (the one dragged out of the house and we assume eaten) who apparently escaped. Now, it's years later and her "safe" community (inside a huge walled fortress) are beset by smart zombies. The art's a li'l funky but I like it...

Punisher #13: Well, thank God that really kind of ummmmm, weird and confusing IRA story is over. It had good parts but with so many gangs infighting I would lose track of the characters. Now, the Punisher is offered a sweartheart deal to go kill thugs in Russia by Nick Fury, YES! Good start to a new story arc...

Well, that's about it, going to a comic show in Tampa Sunday, will post some pictures here (and you can see the old ones now):

Boobye for now and take care Heidi...

Carl, I am glad to hear that your bride is well! It is good to see you here again!

Your take on Identity Crisis 6 is very similar to what my hubby and I think. We went to a comic book discussion group about it last night and all pretty much agreed that there better be a lot of pay off in issue 7!

I have refrained from commenting on GL Rebirth because of some past strained relationships with HEAT members in the past, but do agree that the issue didn't butter my bread. I lost interest in the Hal Jordan character when his series was rebooted and he started acting like a gigolo. That wasn't the Hal Jordan character I remembered from his team ups with Ollie and his JLA adventures.

As for the Avengers Finale, the only reason I intend to pick up New Avengers is the enjoyment Bendis has brought me in the form of Powers and Ultimate Spider-Man. We shall see. If I don't enjoy what I read, I will vote with my pocket book by not picking up further issues. I agree about adding Wolverine WTF?!!

Definitely agree about Bullseye! I love Steve Dillon's art with a passion, and the story accompanying it is sharp. The back story is incredible!

The Punisher big long weird Irish story is over, so that is a relief. I agree that it got a tad over the top, but trusting Ennis means staying along for the ride. I am looking forward to the next story arc.

I haven't been reading the Walking Dead or the Zombie Chronicles, but they sound interesting. Thanks for pointing them out.

Your picture gallery is excellent- you have been to some cool places and done cool things. I hope you have fun at the con this weekend! Jim and I are going to Seattle for their con tomorrow.

Take care! We can compare con notes!

Had a great time at the con, soon to post new pictures at my yahoo site. Ummmmm, pardon my being an idjit, but what is HEAT? Yeah, I was very upset by the revision on GL/HJ, it was a big betrayal of the original Silver Age version. I mean, the late Gil Kane brought the character archtype from oblivion, updated it to the Space Age and then after the Crisis, they stabbed the legacy in the back. After the Parallax story line I never picked up the book again unless my fave GL, Alan Scott, was in the book...

Great question Carl! HEAT stands for Hal's Emerald Advancement Team. It is a group of Hal Jordan fans who were super upset that he was taken out the way he was. They formed a group to get Hal Jordan exonerated and reinstated as GL. In the past, some of their methods have been, in my opinion, questionable.

My husband in particular has had a few run-ins with them. He is a Kyle Rayner fan, as am I, and we would go to the DC boards to discuss the latest issue. Certain members of this group would become argumentative and agitated, and basically ruin a thread because they were so unhappy.

This is not to say all of the HEAT members are like this. I believe in the old adage "a few bad apples spoil the bunch". I think that has happened here quite a bit. A few fellas got brave on the internet and made life pretty miserable for the newer fans.

At any rate, I haven't been impressed with GL Rebirth, but will probably continue to pick it up to see what direction it takes the GL guys in the future.

Actually, I would really love to see Beau Smith come back in and write Guy Gardner, but that's just me!

Sheesh, I knew there were people that I call: "La Comic Nostra" but I didn't know there was one just for Hal, unbelievable. Alan Scott is my fave, Hal second, Guy and Jon coming in about the same. And I never liked Kyle and he's folded in the crunch a few times. But I can't imagine setting out to make a jihad over a comic book character...

Yep, these guys go a tad crazy at times. I don't wish them ill, I just wish they would tone it down at times.

I am of the opinion that we can all have our own likes and dislikes, and not have to agree with each other. I just don't like being told I am wrong for not having the same opinion, and that was a major issue for me with the people in that organization.

I do have to agree Carl about one thing- Alan Scott is king! He is probably my all time favorite, then Kyle and Guy, with Hal and John being next. The one GL character I really don't like is Jade, and it has been that way since Infinity Inc. Personal preference and all, I liked Katma Tui (sp?) best as far as female ringslingers go. I don't really have an opinion about Arisia, since I go back and forth depending on who is writing her.

I still plan to read Rebirth, and your comments about the con you went to and your discussion with Van Sciver make things even more interesting!
