Painkiller Jane is a kick ass gal who doesn't take any crap. Her book by Dynamite Entertainment reflects that, as does the adapted television series. Jane could drink several shots and make you wish for death without thinking twice. She is a hardcore. That is why I am a bit surprised to be presenting issue #3 as a candidate for gratuitous cover of the week discussion.
At first brief glance, this cover just says "dark and harsh". Her co-creator and Marvel EIC Joe Quesada did the cover after all...
Then I look a bit closer and I am reminded a bit of Britney and her flashing days.
Am I losing my mind or do I see cheeks? I don't mean her face...
I am in shock.
I don't even think I can say anymore about it. I don't have the words.

Refusing to go to the Darkseid... er Dark Side!
Confession time.
I am not a big fan of the New Gods. I know that it is blasphemy to not appreciate the characters that Jack Kirby was so instrumental in shaping, but Darkseid and his ilk have never been my cup of tea.
I don't know if it is that I haven't read the right back issues or because of a certain event. I appreciated the nuances that the New Gods added to the JLA/JSA crossover back in the day. Scott Free and Big Barda's presence in the Justice League was a wonderful thing. When Barda was in the JLA under Grant Morrison's watch, I was giddy. She kicks ass! Otherwise, I just haven't felt a lot of passion one way or another. The characters haven't compelled me enough to read a series specifically about them.
As far as villains go, I have always gravitated towards Lex Luthor, Cheetah as portrayed by George Perez, Black Adam, Joker, Ras Al Ghul, Mirror Master, Mr. Freeze, and the more traditional costumed characters. The villainous Darkseid has had his moments with me, but he has never been a favorite. Desaad and Granny Goodness are interestingly evil. I just have never gravitated towards a book about the New Gods.
Since the residents of Apokolips and New Genesis seem to be so prevalent in the upcoming Final Crisis, I would like to find out more about them so that they become more interesting to me. Can you tell me what the best reading material is to do so? I don't want to be ignorant on purpose and would like to learn more making a definitive decision.
Any suggestions?

Clearing the Air...
This morning before I started work, I did my usual round of surfing the internet. I went to all the usual sites and blogs and did a little "wake up" reading. Much to my dismay, there was a post that made minor reference to my initial opinions on Amazons Attack #6. There was really nothing to get upset about other then the fact that I knew my post was one of the ones being referred to and the fact that it wasn't very complimentary. My reaction was to get upset and feel hurt rather then shrug it off.
This makes me very ashamed. I am better than that.
BUT it also made me think.
I have spent the last week very uncharacteristically wallowing in the mud. I have been crabby, moody, and pissy in general. It isn't me. I have allowed events in my personal life and the constant lateness of our books to finally push me over the edge.
No more.
Think what you will of me, but I will not allow external events to shape me. If you don't agree with me, great. That is the first amendment right that I appreciate so much. I don't want to take away from it. Seeing someone else note my lows and use them to their advantage was a wake up call. I need to get back to basics and focus on the positive. That is who I am. I am not a person that needs to always find the negative. I appreciate quality and I like to have fun. This last week I have not been true to myself.

First Response: Amazons Attack #6
I just got home and read Amazons Attack #6 to see how this whole war ends. I read it carefully, trying not to miss a bit. I also tried hard to be objective, considering that I really like the creative team and don't want to give them the bum's rush.

Rock of Love: Is Lacey Really the Devil or Just His Agent?
After taking a bit of time off talking about Rock of Love, I find myself brimming with musings. I know that it really isn't comic book related, but I pretty much figured it would give me a chance to say my peace while taking a night off from bitching about the state of the industry and Diamond.
For those of you who don't watch the show, Rock of Love is a dating show where Poison frontman Bret Michaels is trying to find a woman to fall for. He started with 25 ladies (I use that term loosely) and is now down to five. The last few weeks have seen a mudbowl football game and challenges related to life on the road. Throughout this all, a theme has emerged about each remaining lady. These themes are as follows:
Sam is a sweet, soulful girl who is trying to learn to trust again. Don't let those tattoos fool you- she is a softy.
Jes with the pink and platinum hair is the beauty. She is more refined then some of the other ladies in the house, and she is also younger.
Brandi is a party girl. Her nickname is blowjob Brandi, so that may give an indication of things. I like Brandi for her spirit and her bluntness. She calls 'em like she sees them and parties way too hard.
Heather is the seasoned stripper with a heart of gold. She relates well to Bret and has no problem removing her top whenever possible.
Lacey is the devil. Seriously, they have set Lacey up as the PETA crazy, conniving bitch of the house and you know what? I am convinced. About the sixth time during the last episode that I said "What a bitch", my husband rollled his eyes at me mercilessly. I am obviously convinced.
What is interesting is that in this last episode, with the herd thinning out, personalities have emerged at last. Each girl fits a niche and is a contender. It all boils down to what rocker Bret is looking for. Does he want a crazy chick or does he want a soulful softy with tattoos? At this point I don't know.
What I do know is that this show entertains me every week. I love the fact that a lead singer of such a notorious metal band is trying his hand ala The Bachelor style at finding love. If you would have told me twenty years ago that sexy Bret would resort to a dating show, I would have laughed my ass off. The guy is a legendary cocksman in the fine tradition of Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, and the ilk. The guy gets around. To see him have to tone down his natural predatory tendencies is unbelievable to witness.
I honestly don't think Bret is going to find the love of his life here, though it would be fantastic if he did. Can you imagine the fairytale ending? All of us metal chicks have dreamt of getting the rock star, but very few ever have. It just doesn't happen.
Next week finds the ladies being interrogated by three of Bret's biggest "fans". It looks like the gloves are off for good and that there is a lot of tears and stress. I know I will definitely be in front of my television screeen enjoying every minute of it.

Comics Disillusionment: Trying to Heal
Last night I went down to my basement and was starting to put some stuff in order when I ran across the Young Justice run. My first thought was "OMG, they aren't all bagged and boarded, life is over" and my second thought was "I would really like to browse these issues again". With both thoughts racing through my head, I brought them upstairs, bagged and boarded them all, and proceeded to look through them.
Young Justice was truly a good book. Peter David and Todd Nauck worked well as a cohesive unit, and I really enjoyed reading about the young heroes as they gained confidence and experience. I fell in love with Wonder Girl and Arrowette all over again. I felt great sadness missing Bart Allen after remembering his sweetness and innocence here. When Arrowette says "Scarecrow, I think I will miss you most of all" to Bart, I completely understood where she was getting it from. Brilliant.
Issue #7 made me laugh my ass off and gave me a dose of what a good comic should be. There was emotion, sarcasm, and a wicked catfight. Then Nightwing showed up and it just continued to improve! I am a bit sad that DC decided to end the book and mix the Titans with the YJ characters. I think there was a bit of missing the boat for the sake of kililng Donna Troy and Lillith. It just didn't justify it for me.
Dammit. I want this book back.
To summarize: I found Young Justice to be bittersweet. I really liked this title. When I think about where all the team members are today, it makes me unhappy. Change for the sake of it isn't always best, so this has left me still reeling.

War is a Killer Thrill Ride!
I just got home from seeing War, the film starring Jason Statham and Jet Li. Overall, I really enjoyed the film, and was delighted with the twists and turns that made the ending a total surprise. The action was well choreographed, and there was an element of danger that resonated well. Both Statham and Li are seasoned action movie performers and that really came through here.
My only complaint is the jolt of the ending. I can see now that it is probably best serving to the film to leave viewers thinking, but my initial reaction was a bit of disappointment.
If you get a chance, go see War. It is a full throttle action film that is well worth the price of matinee admission which I relinquished.

Disenchantment with Comics: The Update
I am sitting here with this week's stack of comics in front of me, still filling disenchanted with comics. To give you a barometer of how I am feeling, let me mention a few individual issues and the way they made me feel.
Birds of Prey #109: the internet is already going crazy about this issue, so I am going to try and be brief. Tony Bedard doesn't know his character's history and the editors of the book didn't correct him. This is irresponsible and saddening. What should have been a pivotal, emotional issue is basically a piece of crap. To top it off, they killed a character to further an upcoming event, rather then centering it around the Birds of Prey book. Bottom line: this issue is a pathetic waste of my money other then the nice art by Nicola Scott.
Amazing Spider-Man #543: I really hate this book. It isn't Peter Parker anymore. It is some guy in a Spider-Man suit doing what Marvel editorial dictates and I am sick of it. Bottom line: More dreck that I wasted my money on.
Astonishing X-Men #22: a bright spot for me. This isn't my favorite storyline ever, but I am warming up to it. Did I mention that I think artist John Cassaday is a really hot, talented guy? I love the variant cover, which showcases Wolverine's powerful thighs. Nice touch. Bottom line: Decent stuff.
The Punisher (Max) #50: the book that saved me from losing all faith in humanity. It is really late because of a foul up my retailer had, but I loved it. I am not crazy about Howard Chaykin's art, but it didn't make me cringe here like it did on Hawkgirl. Garth Ennis, I love you too. Bottom line: Courageous, hardcore reading material.
Wolverine #56: A fill-in issue that I actually liked better then the Loeb-Bianchi extravaganza. Once again Chaykin is on art chores. Unbelievable. Bottom line: It was alright- didn't buzz my bells, but didn't repulse me either.
Outsiders crap fest featuring Metamorpho and Aquaman: Josh Middleton's art didn't work here at all, and the story was awkward. Can we just cut the chase and get to the Batman and... series? Bottom line: Hated it!
In better news, I reread the first chapter of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns last night. It has helped heal some bad feelings. I also pulled a few old Wonder Woman back issues to read along with the new Showcase book. Through back issues and excellent trades, I am hoping to start to get my love of the medium back. It certainly isn't going to resurface through this week's new stuff.

Is This Gratuitous? Vampirella Quarterly Summer 2007 #1 Cover B
Seven years ago, I used to read Vampirella. The stories and art were pretty good and I enjoyed following her adventures. Then came the advent of manga style Vampi and Harris Comics seemed to be in flux. I left the sexy vampire behind during this period and haven't revisited her.
Until now.
Regardless of her extremely sexy outfit, I have always had a soft spot for Vampirella. She is pretty damn brave for a bad girl, and her back story is quite fascinating. For sometime I was considering picking up a book to see where the character stands.
Then I saw this cover.
Now before you protest, I know that Vampirella is a sexy character. I am aware that she is scantily clad and I have come to accept that. What made me select this cover for gratuitous candidacy is the cat fight nature of it all. Did I mention that the chick Vampi is fighting with appears to be wearing less clothes then she is? Crazy.

Combat Plans for My Misery: How to Love Comics Again
Wow. I got home tonight and read the comments on my last post. I am a bit teary and touched to see how much you all care, and I am really appreciative of all the great ideas. Your opinions and suggestions make great sense and I want to try and implement them. Here is what I am going to try.
1. Prune the tree. Obviously I am picking up too many books. Several of them are mediocre and/or late and it is making me very jaded. I am also suffering from crossover-itis. The sheer thought of picking up all those damn Countdown tie-ins pushed me over a very fragile edge. The solution is like you said: prune it back and start anew. If I miss out the first time, there is likely to be a trade in the future. Excellent idea!
2. Find the joy in back issues. Rather then dwelling on new books, go and explore the back issue bins. I need to make myself remember what has kept me so interested all these years. I also need to get out my old comics and re-read them. I have over 40 long boxes, and they are not current in their order. Also books have not been sorted in. It is a mess. Obviously I need to spend my time there instead of trying to keep up with the Jones's.
3. Pick up trade paperbacks and graphic novels. There is a lot of good stuff I missed out on, I am sure. I need to get my hands on the Diamond back catalog or just simply go to the local shop or make a road trip and pick up some new stuff. I love trades, and they are more instant gratification.
4. Quit living for Wednesday. This one is a problem because my retailer tends to misspull if Jim and I aren't right there. I don't know how to solve this one without missing several titles a week. I am torn by my longterm loyalty to them but am pretty upset at how my stuff gets missed. This is the toughest one for me to resolve.
5. Take a mini break. I am pondering this one pretty hard. There are still a few books I want to get like 100 Bullets and Y the Last Man. Both are finite, and I don't want to miss the end. I also can't imagine missing out on Wonder Woman. Besides that, I think I might be ready.
6. Try a new genre like Manga, or read books again. Confession: I have never been a fan of manga, but I don't know if it is because I don't know what to look for or if what I have picked up is for kids instead of for me. Help me with this one, please! I read constantly, and just got done re-reading the Harry Potter series, so I am also at the juncture of picking up a new book. What would be good there? I was thinking of picking up Warren Ellis' new novel. Has anyone read that?

Don't Even Get Me Started...
Today Jim and I went to get our comics and they were once again delayed. Three of the four boxes will be there tomorrow and the remaining one will be there on Friday. Diamond's excuse is that UPS fouled up. In my mind, that is just part of the problem. By now Diamond should damn well understand that we have a major problem with UPS in this area and do something about it. Do they? Nope.
My retailer wants to try Fed Ex and Diamond is dragging their feet. While the shop sits and loses money, Diamond does nothing. I am sorry, but what a bunch of assholes. My retailer pays the shipping so why shouldn't he be able to make that decision? It doesn't make sense to me. As a result of this disaster, I feel like Zatanna as being played by "bad" Mary Marvel.
The topper is that I have business meetings the next two days and can't possibly get to the retailer. They close at 6 p.m and I can't get there until after that. I am stuck without books until Saturday unless Jim, who feels ill, decides that he can make the journey downtown to pick them up. It is a f**king comedy of errors that is making me super bitter.
Adding more fuel to the fire, I am so pissed off about the number of tie-ins to 52 and Countdown that I am to the point of just wanting to stop reading comics all together. My positivity and good nature has crumbled in the face of the realization that the industry in general doesn't seem to want me as a customer. The distribution chain doesn't get my books to me on time. The publishers have no freaking clue how to market to me. My local retailer keeps screwing up my orders.
I am about ready to give up, so I am asking for your help. Give me a positive reason to keep buying and reading the books I have been so faithful to for the last thirty-five years. Please???
OR... tell me why to throw in the towel.
It is your choice. Help convince me to stay in the game or to run screaming out of it!

Three Hot Movies in Three Weeks= Bliss
Yesterday I got the Entertainment Weekly Fall Movie Preview issue. Several things quickly became apparent as I leafed through it. The first thing is that there are three movies I am really looking forward to that are coming out soon. The next thing is that there are more movies I am interested in seeing this Fall then I was this Summer. Crazy. With that in mind, I thought I would share with you the three movies that I am psyched about.
The first is War which stars Jet Li and the sexy Jason Statham (pictured). Yes, I said sexy. Damn that man is hot. I loved Crank and both Transporter movies, so I have got to see Statham in action. It also doesn't hurt that Jet Li is in it. The guy kicks major ass. In my mind this movie is a major win-win situation. I get to check out Statham and watch some sweet action. Yay!
Here is the lowdown on War:
"War The Movie": After his partner Tom Lone (Terry Chen) and family are killed apparently by the infamous and elusive assassin Rogue (Jet Li), FBI agent Jack Crawford (Jason Statham) becomes obsessed with revenge as his world unravels into a vortex of guilt and betrayal. The next movie I am curious about is Halloween as directed by Rob Zombie. Evidently this is a prequel of sorts that tells Michael Myer's (thank you Britt!!) back story. Since I really enjoyed Zombie's first two flicks, especially The Devil's Rejects, I am going on gut instinct that I will like this one. I am also a fan of the first two original Halloween movies with Jamie Lee Curtis, so I am hoping to see a revitalization of the franchise.
The specs for this one are:

The third movie is called Shoot Em Up, and stars the incomparable Clive Owen. Monica Bellucci and Paul Giamatti co-star in this over the top action flick. From what I have read and heard, Shoot Em Up goes further then the average film, which may make the average movie goer upset. It is one of those satirical, in-your-face movies that doesn't stop at the natural point; it goes to the point of no return and stays there. Owen seems pretty giddy about his role in it, and has been doing quite a bit of press. I can't wait to see this movie as I can stare at Owen while my hubby enjoys the spectacular beauty of Bellucci.
"A gritty, fast-paced action thriller, "Shoot 'Em Up" kicks into high gear with a memorable opening scene and never relents. Clive Owen stars as Mr. Smith, a mysterious loner who teams up with an unlikely ally (Monica Belluci) to protect a newborn baby from a determined criminal (Paul Giamatti) who hunts them throughout the bowels of the city.

Kick Ass Clip of the Week: Sixx A.M.- Life is Beautiful
It has been awhile since a song has hit me right in the heart, but on this week's Metal Mania, I heard a new tune that I absolutely fell in love with. Sixx A.M., a band featuring Motley Crue bassist and songwriter Nikki Sixx, slay me with "Life is Beautiful", a song from the upcoming Heroin Diaries soundtrack. Give it a look! I know it isn't comic book related but it is cool!
New Comics for August 22
What a weekend! We took two loads of yard waste and assorted other odds and ends to the dump on Saturday and I am so relieved. Our yard actually looks as good as our neighbor's now, so it is a point of pride. The only problem is that it took a half hour massage to get the kinks out. I don't mind though- I think massages have saved my life the last couple of months. It is my one luxury from my birthday presents that I got, and it is worth every penny.

My comic list is a bit large again, but in my last Previews order form, Jim and I ordered only regular monthly titles and no extras, so we should be getting back in line. Headache From Hell: Time for Some Frank Talk..
Here I sit on a Sunday afternoon with a headache that will not go away. That makes me very cranky. It also makes me dread talking about anything on my blog because I know I won't be in a good mood, which means I won't spread anything positive. My gut says to run with it anyway and give a one sentence take on each book sitting in my pile based on first look-through. Scared yet? I know I am.

Is This Gratuitous? Catwoman #70
After a sad week of sorts with the passing of the wonderful Mike Wieringo, I didn't know if I wanted to do the gratuitous post any more. It took some soul searching to decide that this weekly feature is more of a quest for opinions and a bit of fun then a biting, mean spirited venture.
So here I am.
As a huge fan of Adam Hughes' art, and as someone that knows he draws the ladies a bit gratuitous to begin with, I was a bit unsure about selecting this cover. What made me finally decide to is the pose. Catwoman is doing a bit of a Janet Jackson imitation. The only thing different is the lack of men's hands and the fact that she is wearing a top. Otherwise, that is what this cover reminded me of.
I was a bit surprised at how exagerated her proportions were compared to normal as well. It made me wonder if this was a bit over the top. As an Amazons Attack crossover, I was very surprised not to see another woman on the cover pointing a spear at Selina or doing something with a weapon. The basic nature of this cover caught me off guard.
I have to ask you: Is this gratuitous?

How Cool is This? Women in Comics Circa 1982
Looking around at several sites, my attention was brought to the amazing set of pictures by Alan Light of the 1982 San Diego Comic Con. There are something like 165 pictures in that set and it is absolutely incredible. Light managed to capture the biggest of the big creators. It was as if he caught lightning in a bottle. I am really impressed by the fact that Light put these pictures online in his Flickr account and is willing to share them with others. The pictures say so much about the moment. Mostly it really makes me wish I would have been there.
I LOVE the picture of the Women in Comics panel. In my mind it shows that females are not newcomers to the industry by any means. Just look at the list of incredible women pictured as follows:

Amazing.
Trina Robbins continues to knock my socks off today. She is a legend at this point, and my hat is off to her for her talent. I was also impressed to see Jo Duffy, who has been a favorite writer of mine. Seeing Melinda Gebbie of Lost Girls fame is staggering as well. Her talent is awesome. The list continues and amazes me. It rang my bell seeing Lee Marrs. What a cool lady she is- her artwork is sweet. Carol Lay is also an artist. Check out her site here.
Carol Kalish worked in the business end of things as a Vice President at Marvel and her life ended way too soon. Dori Seda was another lady taken from us much too soon. I hadn't known about Catherine Yronwode before seeing the picture, but I googled her and found out she is a complex, fabulous woman. She works in production at Claypool Comics and has two online businesses. Busy lady. Unfortunately I couldn't find out anything about Terry Boyce, so fill me in if you know her story.
We need to remember we are not the first nor are we the last females to love the medium. As we look to the future we need to remember that there were women in the business working in all aspects from creative to business. We need to consider how to keep the flame of these ladies alive by emulating their grace and appreciating that they have been there before. Last but not least, we need to focus on solutions rather then the problems. Seeing this picture makes that crystal clear to me.
I would like to formally bow to these outstanding women. Thank you.

Feminist Musings
I just got done reading "There is Another Hellmouth in Comics" over at Occasional Superheroine. Basically it comes down to this: our lovely commentator there is done blogging about Women in comics. It is an issue that she is so passionate about that it gets her stressed to the point of a stroke. Because of this and a need for new perspective, she is going to walk away from the issue and focus on news and light opinion.
I don't blame her one bit. I feel the same way at times.
It does make me sad though. I appreciate Occasional Superheroine's opinion on many things. She is whip smart and she has a unique perspective. Since she was in the industry, and has a love for comics that may even exceed mine, I enjoy reading her thoughts.
But I still don't blame her for wanting to change her focus.
Sometimes the issue of women in comics makes me want to scream and pull all my hair out. I get the same emotions that things will never change unless there are more women in positions of authority. Then I remember Renae Geerlings's tenure at Top Cow and get a bit sad again. Geerlings disappeared without a trace to go into acting and not much was said about it. I also remember feeling a bit guilty about her moving on because I was worried that she wasn't the right person for the job.
BUT SHE IS A WOMAN, SO I SHOULD SUPPORT HER, RIGHT? Go Renae!
That is a bit off subject, but I guess where I am going with this is that it is easy to pander to the pack mentality associated with females in and around the industry.That is the quickest and easiest way to get hits on your site, right? Heh heh. Hey everyone, I am pissed off and female, come see me lose my mind! That is how I feel things have come to at times. I hate like hell that at times it comes down to snark and anger. I try so hard to separate my emotions from the problems I see and come up with a rational solution rather then sacrifice myself on the altar of the blog counter. If only five people come here, I would rather it be the people that want to talk rationally and solve problems rather then the people who are looking for a fight and possible hype.
That being said, I think that for the most part, the women that blog would like to see changes that focus around the way female super heroes are portrayed without so much emphasis on the bimbo mentality. I think that there are varying degrees to which we take our arguments, and I think that we are similarly hoping for books we want to read. I appreciate these women who speak out, and though I don't always agree, I love the fact that we can speak to the issues. I just don't like it when bloggers get so mad they lose sight of the problems at hand. I believe that is part of what the lovely Occasional Superheroine speaks to that is so frustrating.
That doesn't change the fact that the industry in general still caters to it's target audience. I sometimes think that even with women in positions of authority, things would be extremely slow to change. The demographic is still going to be the same. That being said, I am DYING to see any statistics that either Marvel or DC may have about female readers and their interests. Has there ever been a poll taken? I know I have brought this up before, but I would really like to see that data. If not, I would love to figure out how to take a poll to get significant numbers. The problem with this is the amount to money it would take to make it happen.
The bottom line for me is that I am sad to see my fellow female blogger change target, but I respect and understand her need to. God knows my blood pressure hits the ceiling sometimes. I get so upset that I want to SCREAM and tell my fellow internet users to piss off. Thank God for my workouts, or I don't know what I would do. Seriously. Then I remember the First Amendment and I calm down considerably.
The industry and the comic book internet are in a flux right now. With the disaster of division that is Supergirl #20 at our forefront and the past battles for more female-focused product all around us, something has to give. It may be that some of our strongest voices fade. It may also cause permanent hard feelings between humans that have NEVER EVEN met yet feel deep hurt over hopeless arguments of difference of opinion. That makes me saddest at all.
That being said, I will continue to talk about issues of gender as I see fit and I will always try and come up with a solution if possible. It may not be a change I can foster, but when I see the incomparable Lisa at Sequentially Speaking start up a passionate voice for change in P.O.W.E.R. in Comics, I couldn't be prouder. Good on you, Lisa- you are my hero! Occasional Superheroine, I will continue to haunt your site, whatever you decide to talk about.
The rest of you ladies: I understand your frustrations. I feel it too. I have over 35 years invested in my love of comic books and I am not going away anytime soon. Keep speaking in your unique voice, and with conviction. BUT don't let the feeling that every post must be about a female related issue get you down either. Speak from the heart and speak your mind. If it is a post about something you loved, I want to see that so badly. Focus on what you like and don't worry about the rest of the "pack". We are allowed our own opinions even if we don't always agree.
Men out there: Don't get frustrated and run away, or feel you have to speak in anonymity to make your voice heard. We have to find some middle ground, and I offer that here. I may not always agree but I will hear you out. Even if our stress level gets a bit high, and things aren't going well, know that I will treat you with the same respect I would like to have from you.

The problem with this is the amount to money it would take to make it happen.
The bottom line for me is that I am sad to see my fellow female blogger change target, but I respect and understand her need to. God knows my blood pressure hits the ceiling sometimes. I get so upset that I want to SCREAM and tell my fellow internet users to piss off. Thank God for my workouts, or I don't know what I would do. Seriously. Then I remember the First Amendment and I calm down considerably.
The industry and the comic book internet are in a flux right now. With the disaster of division that is Supergirl #20 at our forefront and the past battles for more female-focused product all around us, something has to give. It may be that some of our strongest voices fade. It may also cause permanent hard feelings between humans that have NEVER EVEN met yet feel deep hurt over hopeless arguments of difference of opinion. That makes me saddest at all.
That being said, I will continue to talk about issues of gender as I see fit and I will always try and come up with a solution if possible. It may not be a change I can foster, but when I see the incomparable Lisa at Sequentially Speaking start up a passionate voice for change in P.O.W.E.R. in Comics, I couldn't be prouder. Good on you, Lisa- you are my hero! Occasional Superheroine, I will continue to haunt your site, whatever you decide to talk about.
The rest of you ladies: I understand your frustrations. I feel it too. I have over 35 years invested in my love of comic books and I am not going away anytime soon. Keep speaking in your unique voice, and with conviction. BUT don't let the feeling that every post must be about a female related issue get you down either. Speak from the heart and speak your mind. If it is a post about something you loved, I want to see that so badly. Focus on what you like and don't worry about the rest of the "pack". We are allowed our own opinions even if we don't always agree.
Men out there: Don't get frustrated and run away, or feel you have to speak in anonymity to make your voice heard. We have to find some middle ground, and I offer that here. I may not always agree but I will hear you out. Even if our stress level gets a bit high, and things aren't going well, know that I will treat you with the same respect I would like to have from you.

New Comics for August 15
Tonight my workout partner was squating 315 pounds and didn't realize that he didn't re-rack the weights correctly, so the damn thing fell down. In the process it nailed me in the chest and knocked the wind out of me so as a result I am a bit cross. It will probably just be a bruise, but it scared the living crap out of me. My partner Kerry felt terrible, and I forgive him, but it reminded me how heavy we are lifting, and how much that is when you put momentum behind it. As a result, I am a bit wary.
It is a heavy week for DC books in my pile. I don't know if it is the timing or the quality, but it should be a fun time reading them all. Here is the list:
