Making Mischief with Marvel: Petey Single?

Amazing Spider-man 545

"The end of an era" is the cryptic message that Marvel sent with this image.

What does that mean?

It means that Mary Jane either:

A. DIES

B. DIVORCES PETER

C. JOINS A CULT, ABANDONING PETER COMPLETELY

What is the deal? Is the old ball and chain keeping Spider-Man down? What the hell!!?? Can't the guy be happy?

I guess that while Marvel is turning their major player's lives upside down, they don't want to miss the opportunity for Peter to free up and get some new booty. God forbid he misses out on that.

I am suitably outraged at this image. What is your first impression??

First impression....seeing that red gloved hand.....

"Why does Daredevil wanna break Spider-Man and MJ up?"

This is what happens to my brain after 1am, lol.

Hey, have you seen the shambles of his own lovelife? IF you were him and saw a chronic whiner like Peter Parker getting the stable and loving relationship/marriage, you might be bitter and want them broken up, too.

Or, maybe Matt has finally given in to that "man crush" has had for Peter for years.

Take you pick. ;)

[The preceding has been a non-paid humorous moment of sarcasm. Joke responsibly. ;)]

I was wondering the same thing, Nick - why is Daredevil breaking them up?

I know JQ has said he thinks having PP and MJ married has been a problem, so it looks like he's using his editorial magic wand to "fix" that. Interesting how an editor can paint the universe to his own liking.

Aparently after this "one more day" arc will be "A New Day" arc where Amazing comes out 3X per month and the other two Spidey books will end. They say the new Amazing will be more "up beat" than Spider-Man has been in the past. So, I guess he's not too broken up about his break up.

I think we'll have to wait and see how it all works out. But I sure don't like how JQ just makes the MU his own.

The image has no emotional effect on me because I'm so out of the loop with mainstream Marvel happenings that I can't even get worked up about things like this. There have been so many big shakeups lately that they've lost their punch.

I would, however, buy five copies of any issue which featured Danny Rand getting back together with Misty Knight.

I'm with you Vaklam. I so don't care what happens after all the dumb stuff after the last few years.

Hype - don't buy it!

I'm not a huge Spidey fan by any means, although I try to keep a little current on storylines via the web, but not being a big fan, the news doesn't have much effect on me. I don't quite get why JQ is so obsessed with breaking up an iconic couple though. I guess having a decent love life in the MU is forbidden (Scott/Jean/Emma, Reed/Sue, Spidey/MJ, Daredevil, Hulk, Punisher, Wolverine/Anyone, Gambit/Rogue, etc). The list goes on - I'm sensing a theme here. Maybe it's a setup for a new book launch called The Broken Hearted Avengers guest starring Dr. Phil against the triple threat of villains Ball, Chain, and New Booty! It will never be the same again, and this time we mean it! Order your 6 variant covers today!

Um, yeah, I never joke responsibly. :)

Nick, you made me snort milk out my nose!! Too funny!

Lisa, great thoughts on this one. I was wondering if Joe Q was feeling a bit territorial about the Peter Parker character and specifically his relationship with Mary Jane. We shall see...

If I keep shouting it, will it happen?? :-)

Swinebread, I am leaning heavily towards the not buying it angle. It looks like more hype and I don't know how much more my old heart can take.

It looks like a "pass" for now!!

The Broken Heart Avengers....

I think it is a hit!!

You made my night!

Yes, it's a "clap for Tinkerbell" kind of thing. C'mon, everyone! We can do it!

Hmmmmm, if JQ(uantitynotQuality!) hate MJ, suddenly I like her again! That guy aside from his Daredevil art is a curse word in my house. Wolverine can't smoke a cigar 'cause kids will think smoking's cool! This character is gay 'cause I say so even if it was never part of the story for over 40 plus years! (Rawhide Kid, anyone?) And so he can't stand Spider-Man being married? Well, I can't stand editors that act like they own the comic and worry about what they want, not what the fans who pay their salary want. And btw, Joe? Nice editing job on that whole Civil War clusterf***...

Not only should Marvel keep Pete and MJ, I say they should have kept baby May. Where Quesada has claimed that having Spidey married curtails story possibilities, I see just the opposite - it opens up whole new realms of storytelling options, for those who can see them. Story comes from conflict, right? Well, where do we find more conflict than in most marriages?

I say they should have kept the baby because that would only add *more* stories. Pete has a new person he feels responsible for; how would that have affected his decision whether or not to unmask in Civil War? When is baby May ready to learn about her Daddy's other identity? Plus, the image of a web-spun baby-carrying harness is just too adorable...

So, yeah, the cover does imply to me that Marvel is moving in exactly the wrong direction on this.
