Is This Gratuitious? Elephantmen #18 Campbell cover

It has been awhile since my last "gratuitous" post and I am probably setting myself up by featuring such an ironic cover, but I just couldn't resist. This week's victim is the cover for Elephantmen #18 with art by J. Scott Campbell with Boo Cook.

No stranger to titillating covers, Campbell has done a great imitation of his past work here. The cover girl is obviously done full out "bad girl" style as the cover headlines. There is a see-through top with lots of boobage on display. She is wearing cute little panties and she appears to have some paint dripping on her legs. This is an obvious cover to draw new readers, and you know what? I bet it will work very well.

Before you slaughter me for picking on ole' J. Scott, you have got to remember that he has made lots of serious coin with his sexy depictions of women. This cover was right up his alley, and he took it to the limit. The biggest surprising thing that is missing is erect nipples so I have to give a lttle bit of slack. That is a pleasant surprise. LOL.

What do you think of this cover? Do any of you read this book? What is it all about? Is the cover representative of what is inside of the book? OR is it all just irony?

Here is the solicitation:

"ELEPHANTMEN #18
Story RICHARD STARKINGS
art MARIAN CHURCHLAND
cover J. SCOTT CAMPBELL w/BOO COOK
variant cover J. SCOTT CAMPBELL

“BAD GIRL”
Hiromi Kiyoko " Miki " is intent on finding out Hip Flask's deepest darkest secrets... but Miki and her mother, Keiko, have some secrets of their own.

SEPTEMBER 17 - 32 PAGES - FC - $2.99"

Okay- the ball is in your court. Help me out here.

Is this gratuitous?

Read some issues of Elephantmen and um this cover....yeah...pretty outta place compared to past issue...and it's kinda outta place in relation to the story too.

Example of one of the earlier covers:

I'm thinking with a story titled called Bad Girl, that its meant to be gratuitous.

I really like that cover. I know nothing about the comic however so i can't say whether it is gratitous or not.

Nick, thank you for the link. I wasn't familiar with the book, and it definitely has a whole different flavor then previous stuff.

I guess I am assuming this is a spoof at this point in time...

Hmmm...

James, that is what I was wondering. It sure appears that this is the case.

Swinebread- LOL! You always know the perfect thing to say!!

Saranga, I think the biggest thing that caught me off guard is the title of the book and the covers of the past are so divergent of this one. It has got to be a spoof!

What's that she's saying on the cover -- "But is it art"?

Elephantmen is the best book out there at the moment.

The backstory is the daily existence of humans who were crossed with animals in utero. Made for war, they now have full human rights for the remainder of their lives. Of course, they have demons of their own, such as harrowing war flashbacks, or hunters on their tails who sell their body parts to collectors.

Really first-class. Don't let the new cover dissuade you. As boner-inducing as it is, the quality of the creative work is excellent.

Actually Miki is a very flirty character and hits on the elephantmen a lot of the time. Her in a cover like this does not seem odd. Besides, covers don't accurately depict what the issue is about 50% of the time, I would guess.
