At the grocery store tonight it was pure hell. Evidently Thanksgiving is in a week and a half and people are starting to panic. I couldn't believe the sheer amount of food in carts and the tension level felt. I figured we would have at least until this coming weekend before the panic set in. I was wrong.
In reading this week, Y the Last Man #59 went in a direction I was not expecting. Yorick's reaction to last issue's tragic event was one of strength and a sense of reckoning. I was not prepared for that as I figured violence would beget more violence. What this means for the end of the journey is definitely a mystery. I will miss Yorick and his cast very much when it is all done with next issue.
The Search for Ray Palmer: Red Rain was very well done. The cast of Donna, Jason, Kyle, and Bob is a success as far as I am concerned. In this issue, the gang pays a visit to a world where Batman is a vampire. Kelley Jones' eerie art really set the tone and the script by Peter Johnson clinched it for me. Having artists Eric Battle and Angel Unzueta also on board didn't distract me, which was a pleasant surprise. I have really come to appreciate the journey these characters on and think it is the highpoint of the whole "Countdown" saga.
"Secret Invasion" kicked off in The New Avengers: Illuminati #5. I can't say I was surprised by how it all went down, as the characters who were revealed as skrulls has supposedly died or disapeared prior to being shown. I really can't decide what to think about this and if I even want to follow it. I will have to read it again to be sure which direction to be follow. It didn't instantly earn my love, so that is something to consider.
Does anyone else thing that Astonishing X-Men is the storyline that never ends? Cripes, I can't even remember how the team got in this soup. Does anyone know when issue #24 is supposed to come out?
Other then my review of Fallen Angel #21, I haven't read the rest of my stack. I am busy studying for my pesiticide dealer-manager test. Wish me luck as I am going to take it Tuesday. I have to renew every four years, and it is that time again. Luckily most of the book is common sense so I am hoping to do well.
Nothing more tonight. I have to read my pesticide book and try and remember as much as possible. Since I have to work tomorrow while several of you lucky people have the day off, it is crucial to be ready now for the test on Tuesday. I am jealous of those of you that have the day off. My postman friend is planning to go see a movie and relax. Jealous, I tell you! LOL!

Is This Gratutious? Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Annual #1
After a short break from my regular feature highlighting possible "gratuitous" candidates, I am back this week with a cover that may be interpreted several ways, one of them being that this portrayal of Iron Man, surrounded by several women in skimpy bikinis crosses the line.
What led me to single this cover out is the fact that said women are in beach wear when it appears that normally they would be in a more formal attire, including a lab coat or a business suit. It is a well known fact that Tony Stark is a playboy, so I am torn between wondering if this is a James Bond nod or just another opportunity to show hot chicks with guns.
That being said, I am happy that the women are wearing bottoms, which is a definite improvement over some of the other covers I have highlighted. I am also pleased that Jim Cheung can restrain himself from drawing huge ta-tas. That is a plus! In fact, Cheung normally does a very natural job on his portrayal of characters of both sexes, which is probably why he nailed the job on Young Avengers. His female characters there showed a strength of character rather then a strength of underwire.

Review: Fallen Angel #21
“Mature readers” looking for a quality read: I have the book for you. Fallen Angel by IDW Publishing is the kind of book that can revitalize a person’s love for the medium. Featuring a city that I get lost in and characters that are unforgettable, this is the comic book that captures the imagination.
Originally published by DC Comics, Fallen Angel chronicles the life of Lee, a guardian angel who lost her favored status with God and now resides in the city of Bete Noire, nicknamed “the city that Shapes the World”. Increasingly, the city and its occupants have taken more of a front row in the book, and some of the mystery surrounding the characters is coming to life. As Lee’s son begins to find his place as the new magistrate of the city, his part in the book has become more pronounced. Left in an orphanage, her son had no idea what he was meant to be and became a man of the cloth. His confusion and horror at his new job have textured the book in a whole new light then I believe originally intended.
This is the kind of book that seems to write itself. Writer Peter David has let the book go in directions I would have never expected. Most readers picked up the book in its original incarnation hoping to find that Linda/Matrix/Supergirl (David's previous book) had come to a new title with a new life. What they got is so much more. A city of mystery and deadly secrets with a jaded magistrate, an angry drunk of an angel, a barkeep with great heart, the remorseless drug dealer Asia Minor, and Black Mariah, the female who is still mostly a mystery. Many characters on the peripheral have come and gone, adding a dimension of fear and life on the edge.
In issue #21, the Fallen Angel herself takes a back seat as her son Jude starts to realize his influence. Noting that a terrible dictator by the name of Antar Yyv has emerged and is committing horrible atrocities, Jude turns to those he does not trust for help. His enforcer Slate sends him to Black Mariah who fills him in on Yyv’s secret weaknesses. Asia Minor also enters the fray as his role in the city is made clearer. Together they can indeed “shape” the world.
I have to pause to praise artist J.K. Woodward. Since the book has been at IDW, Woodward has become as integral to its success as David. The art here is so gorgeous that it sometimes gives me pause. With muted shading and excellent pacing, Woodward takes the reader on a visual journey that serves to enhance the story being told. The images can be stark in their horror as well as their beauty. At this point, I can’t imagine the book without this creative team in place.
The story here involves several characters but still manages to feel intimate. That is amazing to me. What a gift this creative team has. The dictator is painted as human and frail, with many flaws. As his life is revealed, the reader can feel the horror and the pity for him. When he meets a young girl and their fates become intertwined, I found myself holding my breath waiting to see what would happen next. The reveal is the ultimate treat here, with a clever twist that put the bow on the package.
I hate to gush, but Fallen Angel is truly a high quality book with consistent excellence. From the lush covers to the gut wrenching appeal of the city of Bete Noire, I always feel like I am included in the story being told. Other then Grant Morrison’s Invisibles, this is the second book I have actually dreamed about. The characters are flawed but compelling. Their story and that of the city intertwine to entertain and affect the reader’s emotion and gut.
Bottom line: If you haven’t read Fallen Angel, you are missing something special. Issue #21 is no exception, and as self contained story, it is a great starting point for new readers. So what are you waiting for? Go pick up a copy!

Random Thoughts and Musings
There are so many things going on that I want to address, but getting home after 7:30 p.m. at night after being gone since 6:30 a.m. is making it dang near impossible. I find that at this time at night I am more apt to make spelling and grammatical errors. After a ten hour workday and a long workout, I am spent mentally and physically. Somehow I am going to have to figure out how to reprioritize so I can get home by 7 p.m. That is my goal - making that work so I can spend more time blogging and talk about issues that are affecting me.
I also want to start doing more reviews. It has bothered me for quite some time that I don't review comics very much anymore. It used to not be that way. When I started doing reviews for 4 Color Review back in the day, that is all I did. I very seldom did op-ed pieces and I certainly didn't focus on news. Reviews were my deal. Then I started my blog and felt like I had free reign to talk about whatever comic book or pop culture issue caught my fancy. This has led to me straying from my original focus. How I am going to get back to this is uncertain, but I am going to find time.
The best thing to come out of having such a busy schedule is that I watch a maximum of two hours of television a day. I used to average four to six, which is way too much. Now I focus on watching shows I really like and it makes me appreciate it that much more. Before I think I relied too much on TV. I am happy to focus on it less now. God knows that after a long day of staring at the computer it can't be great for my eyes to watch the boob tube. That makes me wonder if all the reading I do at night is not helping either. No wonder I wear glasses.
One thing that has been on my mind is the writer's strike. I am glad to see the writers asking for a piece of the pie. My biggest problem is that I am not very familiar with unions as a tool for change, as I have never been close to anyone that was in one until the last ten years. My exposure to unions previous to this was the UPS strike that almost killed our business over a decade ago.
That being said, the response of writers saying that they would like to write comic books or put an emphasis on it as an income leaves me a bit cold. It makes me concerned for the men and women who already make their primary living doing this. How will that affect their income? If a well known TV writer wants to get some money and get involved in writing, will they drop the industry like a hot potato when the strike is resolved? The cynical part of me is really concerned about this.
There is also a huge amount of division over the issue of feminism in comics coming to the forefront. I see so many folks talking about it from so many angles that it boggles my mind. I don't see an easy or quick resolution to this issue anytime soon. The one thing I do want to note is that it has been a bit more difficult to find "gratuitous" cover candidates. Whether this has anything to do with the issue at hand is anyone's guess. It may be that I don't dig deep to find a cover. My hubby has helped me in the past and I have stumbled upon a few. Lately because I have factored out certain series like Red Sonja and Witchblade, it has made it more interesting and sparser.
On that note, I am off to eat dinner. I am starving after a two hour workout!! Have a wonderful nigh!

TV Guide "Covers" Heroes
Normally marketing gimmicks are irritating to me, but I am strangely intrigued by the four covers TV Guide is going to have out November 8. Jim Lee, Phil Jimenez, Tim Sale, and Michael Turner are the artists providing the work that will be seen.
What gets my attention is that each artist has done some of the best work I have seen from them in this effort. As someone who has been upset by Turner's latest work, I really have to say he brings it here. Also, Lee provides some of the most photo realistic style I have seen in his work. As a longtime Jimenez groupie of sorts, I am thrilled that he has been included here. The homerun for me is Sale's gorgeous portrayal of Sylar, Maya, Monica, and Micah (pictured at right). His work on Heroes has been nothing short of phenomenol.
For a real treat, head on over to Newsarama and check out all four covers. As a comic book fan, I am happy to see such outstanding work will be seen by the general populace. It is an excellent opportunity to get some notice. As a fan of the television show, I love the fact that it is getting "covered" so beautifully. After last night's episode, I am more intrigued then ever.

New Comics for November 7
Well it's here. Pre-Christmas panic is starting to set in. I know that we haven't even had Thanksgiving yet, but I would never know this was the case after walking into my local grocery store tonight. The first thing I saw was two rows of Christmas goodies next to a small amount of pumpkin pie. This means that the countdown has begun. God help us all!

Random Thoughts and Musings
Here it is, the first day of "falling back" already. I can't believe it is starting to get dark at 4:45 p.m. After being so ill this weekend, I am still a bit disoriented but am finally feeling a bit better. The time change hopefully helped as it allowed me to get an extra hour of sleep. The really bad thing is that I had to miss my nephews' birthday party today in Portland and I am broken hearted about it. The boys are 14 and 11 this past week and they are the most important thing in my life. Unfortunately, I just couldn't make the trip. I couldn't drive four hours feeling like this. Hopefully I can make it up to them in the next two weeks.
While laying on the couch, I attempted to browse my new comics. I read a few, glanced at a few, and randomly decided to save a few until I felt better. After this round of "looks", here is my opinion.

Excellent Guest Pencils News: Snejbjerg on Two Issues of The Boys
Still sick. Still whining. Finally got out of bed and am checking out the computer. Then I see this little bit on Newsarama. This news is almost enough to get me over my illness.

"With issues #13 and #14 (December and January, respectively), Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson invite a new member into their exclusive Boys club, as Peter Snejbjerg steps in to help with the artwork for the two issues.
For Snejbjerg, the issues give him a chance to flex his muscles…to put it mildly. “As Garth put it in the script: ‘Unmistakable, obvious, disturbing.’” Snejbjerg said. “That just about says it all, doesn't it? Random Thoughts and Musings
If my blogging has been a bit spotty and distant this week, I apologise. I have a sore throat, body aches, chills, and a fever so I am being whiny and a bit of a baby. The fact that tomorrow is Friday and I can depend on Saturday to get a bit of rest is definitely a help.
Halloween was definitely quiet here at Casa Fairplay. We had one group of trick and treaters and that was it so we have a bunch of mini Hershey bars with almonds left. To my credit, I haven't eaten any and don't plan to. It will be a nice treat for Jim in the next month. Because I got home late and didn't feel good I lounged on the couch and we watched the "Top 100 Scariest Movie Moments" on Bravo. It was fun to watch the various clips and hear the commentary from horror movie directors, stars, and film critics.
That being said, I haven't read my comics other then to mostly browse. Countdown #26 seemed like a bit of a summary so that kind of pissed me off. Hopefully now things will pick up. (This is me being optimistic or maybe it is the cold/fever tablets talking>).
I pondered the Occasional Superheroine/Pretty Fizzy Paradise discussion about using the argument that "you don't have a vagina" can backfire/justify an opinion. I tend to like to be able to use a more rational argument then attesting to my basic female anatomy to make a point, so this was a bit of a sticky situation for me. Rather then jumping on either bandwagon, I am going to ponder this one a bit more.
How was your Halloween, by the way? So many of you had exciting adventures and wore cool costumes. It did my heart good, and made me smile. Next year I am vowing to be back to my old self in that regard. Also I must note that Halloween will be on a Friday next year so I should be able to throw our annual party again. Yay!
Not much more to tell. I am feeling ill and exhausted so it is back to the couch for me. I have to work tomorrow and 6 a.m. comes early!

Cheesy Metal Goodness: Grim Reaper - See You in Hell
Holy Crap! This video is awesomely bad! As a metalhead of many years, this brings back many memories of when Grim Reaper was known for the guy with the cool metal pipes. The outfits clearly point to a period of time we may never see again but will fondly remember.

New Comics for October 31
Having new comics on Halloween just seems cool, you know? It is like a double celebration- getting good stuff to read and going out and having good stuff to eat. Unfortunately, I am going to be home that night, wondering if we will get any trick or treaters. Last year we had none!

Random Thoughts and Musings
I had every intention of doing quick take reviews today but life got in the way. First Jim and I went and got him new jeans as all the pairs he owned had holes or rips in them. Then we bought hardcore tree trimmers because we have quite the project. We received a notice, as did most of our neighbors, that we needed to clean up the alley way behind our homes. It was quite the pisser as we had no idea that we needed to do that. We went and walked around behind our fence where for almost two hours we proceeded to prune like madmen. We didn't finish, but I am going to call the city and at least let them know we are trying.
Then we went to our friend Kerry's house and helped him repair his fence, which had fallen down. Jim also helped Kerry's wife plant a tree. That was another couple of hours, and we were happy to help as Kerry has helped us with our yard several times. As we left Kerry's house, the sun was setting. We still had grocery shopping and laundry to do.
This means it is 8:15 p.m. and I am just now sitting down. I haven't checked my e-mail and I haven't even begun to get my stuff ready for tomorrow. The weekend has gone way too fast, and I am dreading the week.
For Halloween I am going to be a white collar worker. Yep, after all my planning and thinking, I have got nothing. There are too many external things going on that are causing me to put one of my favorite holidays on the back burner. The good news is that next year being a leap year, Halloween will be on a Friday, so I can jump back into it with glee.
Jim and I also had a conversation about the first comics we ever bought. Today marks the 20th anniversary to the day of when he got his first comic book. That is incredible. Happy Anniversary of sorts, Honey!

Tired of Team Shots for Covers: Ultimate Fantastic Four #50
Wow. Ultimate Fantastic Four is going to hit issue 50 in January. That is absolutely amazing! Kudos to Marvel for that. I see they are celebrating with a team cover shot. Neat.
I have noticed that the trend on covers lately is to feature the team, either posing or getting ready to go into battle. While this is a cool approach, it has been overused to the point that I am thirsty for action driven covers like the Punisher War Journal #15 cover I referred to earlier. That being said, this cover by Marko Djurdjevic is off-putting to me.
I can't get over the fact that Sue looks quite manly. There, I said it. I also am very scared of Ben Grimm as he is baring his teeth like he is ready to eat the reader for breakfast. While I appreciate the cool color effects and quite like the fact that Reed is putting up his dukes, this cover underwhelms me.
On that note, I am curious to hear your opinions about what you think makes a great cover. Is it the action? Do you like the team pose? What appeals to you?

Another Cover I Love: Jack of Fables #19
Brian Bolland is like the cover god of all cover gods to me. Along with Glenn Fabry and Adam Hughes, he is one of the few artists that can consistently present the reader with a gorgeous cover that conveys the feel of the story while remaining true to it. This image is no exception.
I absolutely love the fact that Jack and his cronies are hiding under Bo Peep's skirt while a crew of Keystone cops struggle to get to them. The expression on Jack's face alone sells the cover to me. The rich texturing of her gown and the voluminous hoop skirt add a beauty that makes the reader's eye wander to it. If I had this cover and the Fantastic Four cover to chooser between, I would pick this in a heartbeat. Bolland's amazing eye for detail and his sense of humor have saved the day many a time.
Though I have always preferred having the artist on a book illustrate the cover, having Bolland on hand to do so is a surefire way to sell a book. I can't deny that.

Covers I Love: Punisher War Journal #15
Since I posted a cover image I didn't care for yesterday, I thought I would post a few that really appealed to me. The first one is this cover for Punisher War Journal #15. I love this image by Ariel Ollivetti and think it would sell books.
What captures my attention is the action feel of the picture. Punisher is playing for keeps with Kraven the Hunter. I can literally feel the elbow crunching into Kraven's cheek. I appreciate the intent look on Frank's face as he fights for his life. The sheer power of the characters is shown through large, weightlifter arms and the ripples of muscle in Frank's back.
The water at the bottom of the cover adds a clever effect as does the sun shining through the top of the building. Everything about this is eye catching.
I would buy this comic off the shelf based on the visual imagery alone. What about you?

Is This Cover Lacking?: Fantastic Four #553
For quite awhile now I have been doing a featured called "is this gratuitous" in which I post a cover and ask for your opinions about whether you think it has crossed that line or not. I really enjoy reading the comments and appreciate the fact that we have a civilized discourse about whether a cover is or is not, in fact, gratuitous.
That being said, last night I was looking through Previews and saw the cover to Fantastic Four #553. I was horrified because at first glance, I thought Marvel had lost their minds and let Rob Liefeld do the cover. Looking closer, I realized that "superstar" Michael Turner had done the art. My response was to be very concerned.
When Witchblade debuted as a series, I thought Turner was a freaking genius. I loved how sexy he drew Ian and Jackie, giving the ladies equal time to check out the goods. His art struck me as bold and really set a new trend in comic books.
Now when I see his covers, I cringe. I respect Turner for his bravery and resolve in battling cancer. I met him once and he was very sweet. It makes me feel bad to have this reaction, but I just can't help it. What happened to the magic? Is Mike feeling okay?
As with the uproar over the Justice League "Power Girl booby" cover, I am seeing a pattern of "phoning it in" from Turner. I really swore this was a Liefeld image, especially when looking at Thing.
The problem is that I just don't feel like I can be objective here. I would love your input. Is it me or does the cover fall short of expectations?

Because I have been enjoying rocking out to my girl Lita Ford so much, I thought I would post a "Bonus" metal video to celebrate.
"Hungry" is one of those videos that cracks me up. The Alice in Wonderland theme mixed with a wet and wild Lita splashing and preening make for a good time. It takes me back to those fond memories of watching Headbangers Ball Saturday nights while sucking down brewskis and partying with friends.

Hot Metal Video of the Week: Lita Ford - Falling In And Out Of Love
Once again I have to give a shout out to the ladies of metal, and this week it goes to Lita Ford. Most well known for her duet with Ozzy Osbourne and her rendition of "Kiss Me Deadly", Lita truly exudes the rock and roll spirit. Sexy, raunchy, and playful, Lita also captured many a man's heart.
Quick story: my friend got us kicked out of Starry Night Club in Portland when Lita played. He got hammered and couldn't resist running up to the stage and fondling her leg, on up to her thigh. God knows we were out there quicker then a shot. Drunk, horny guy at Lita Ford concert with front row capabilities equals a bad time!! LOL!!
Enjoy this video. It is one of my favorite Lita songs ever and always brings back fond memories. Lita can really rock- she is a guitar player, song writer, and a singer. Coming from the Runaways to solo success, Lita had my admiration.

Spider-Man "One More Day" and Green Lantern #25 Experience Delays
I just read over at Newsarama that the Spider-Man "One More Day" saga is experiencing shipping delays. Marvel announced the following (with additional info from Newsarama):

My thoughts about this? I am not surprised about the Spider-Man delays. Joe Quesada has been more late then timely in his pencilling since taking over as EIC at Marvel. My quibble is not that he is an artist in an executive position. What bothers me is that there are many talented artists out there that can make deadlines that could have done the job but didn't get selected. Stick to EIC, Joe. Let a talented newcomer or a dependable old timer do the job.
Green Lantern being two weeks late is not a tragedy. It is just a bit of a pain because it is a landmark issue that is set to bring things together as the conclusion of the Sinestro Corps event. As we all wait for the "big bang" we now know we have two more weeks to tough it out.
I honestly don't know why I am not freaking out like a good fangirl. Maybe it is the exhaustion from two hours of weight lifting. Maybe I am desensitized. Hell, I don't know. All I know is that there is other stuff out there that is more timely, and if I even notice how late these books are, it will be a miracle. Hmmm...

Feeling Mixed Emotions: Catwoman #72
If making a reader feel uncomfortable and upset is a writing feat, Will Pfeifer has scored a home run with me. Catwoman #72 broke my heart. After seeing Selina reach for the heights of goodness as a new mother to knowing that she is destined to go back to a life of crime, my emotions ran the gamut.
Adam Hughes' amazingly fitting cover and David Lopez' incredible interiors only served to heighten my already distraught feelings. Selina's feelings of helplessness and her ultimate decision put me on a roller coaster ride.
At the end of this issue, part of me was furious. How dare Pfeifer do this to Selina? After all she went through to become a mommy and the nostalgia of her feelings for the father, it flat hurt to watch her do what she did. How is Slam going to feel?
The writing is on the wall and on the "...and evil shall inherit the earth" poster. Selina is going to be a criminal again. It makes me sick and it disgusts me but I know I will continue to pick up the book to witness the journey. I care about the character and want the best for her, so knowing that she is going back to her old ways is sad.
Is it strictly plot license or is it a more permanent change? Only time will tell. This is one time that I am willing to sit back and buy a ticket for the ride.

Quick Take Reviews for October 21
Red Sonja #26- The book slinks slowly towards the big battle with Kulan Gath as the readers take in a flashback of a woman crucial to Gath’s existence.
The Good: the really kick ass David Mack cover and the fact that the battle is finally, maybe here.
The Bad: I am getting really impatient with the book.
Grade: C.
Devi #14- Devi and Kratha beat the crap out of each other while “Horseman of the White Steed” enters the fray. Lots of ass kicking and trash talk ensue.
The good: I am enjoying the action here. The fight scenes are awesome.
The bad: I am not thrilled with the art.
Grade: C.
Snakewoman: Tales of the Snake Charmer #4- Easily my favorite Virgin Comics offering. In this issue, Jessica has awakened with the awareness that she has met Sari, the snake charmer and that Raj is the Cobra King, Jessica’s chosen mate. Thing get ugly real fast as the 68 are out to find the Snakewoman.
The Good: I really enjoyed the back-story of gem and was excited that new key players have fallen into place.
The Bad: The fact that Virgin rebooted this character’s book so soon. I would have been happy if the original title would have continued.
Grade: B.
The Sword #1- Dara wakes up to a normal day that goes quickly awry as a deadly secret is revealed. This is easily the best new offering I have read in a long time. The Luna Brothers have another hit on their hands.
The Good: Most first issues make the mistake of trying to pack too much into the book or being too evasive. This issue doesn’t make that mistake as we are introduced to characters that each have a role to play in taking the book to the next level. I appreciate the Luna Brothers’ tag team approach to creating, and it has worked well for them. The third time seems to be the charm here.
The Bad: Nothing bad to say at this time.
Grade: A.
Birds of Prey #111- Tony Bedard turns things around with a simple tale of what happens when the Calculator meets Oracle. This is the type of story Bedard excels at telling.
The good: As much as I missed Nicola Scott’s art, Jason Orfalas ably filled in here. I loved the story being told, period. The setting was great, and the fact that Oracle and Calculator broke bread together was genius.
The Bad: That the story had to end. I enjoyed it.
Grade: B.
Checkmate #19- This book continues to thrill me as the inevitable confrontation with Amanda Waller nears its climax. “The Wall” must resort to dirty tricks and blackmail, which are two things she excels at.
The Good: Waller is an exquisite piece of work, and writer Greg Rucka has really captured her. Watching Sasha undergo interrogation while the rest of the players take their places on the field was compelling. I can hardly wait to see how this ends.
The Bad: No bad comments on this one.
Grade: A.

The Coolest Gift EVER: Justice League of America #126, page 9
Last night when I got home from working out, Jim was waiting for me with a huge surprise. He gave me a page of Justice League of America art by Dick Dillin.
I was stunned, thrilled, and surprised. I never thought I would be privileged enough to own a piece of art by my all-time favorite.
Now I do, and I am beyond pleased.
There is no better gift then one that you really wanted and never expected. Jim really scored the brownie points on this one.
The kicker is that it wasn't an anniversary, holiday, or even my birthday. Jim got it for me because I have been under a great deal of stress lately and he wanted to cheer me up.
Wow.
I wanted to share this with you and give some love to my hubby for getting me this. I remember this page clearly and this issue as well. Dick Dillin is one of the all time greats in my eyes.
For a quick back story, this issue was published in January 1976. The title of the story is "The Evil Connection". The story was "men only" as neither Wonder Woman or Black Canary were featured in the issue. That is the only bummer. Otherwise this story stands in my eternal memory as a part of a well done run. Good stuff.

Is This Gratuitous: X-Men #204
This week's cover once again shines the spotlight on the X-Men books. This is not on purpose. I didn't wake up this morning and decide to pick on them again. The cover art here by Michael Choi needed a second look and I just couldn't ignore the fact that it was also X-Men related.
Evidently Rogue has absorbed the powers of a contortionist, because her pose on the cover of X-Men #204 shows a great deal of flexibility. It also appears that Gambit hasn't lost his desire to get some loving as his hand is enroute to grabbing Rogue's hiney.
Because of the nature of the upward thrust of the boobs and the prominence of her aerobized butt, I have got to call on you to have a discussion about this.
Is this gratuitous?

Thanks to your thoughts and much searching I am narrowing it down. I definitely know I will not be going as a "strip search sally" or a "jailbait. I wonder if I could get the guy's gun slinger outfit and modify it? I certainly wouldn't fit the bill of "chick magnet". LOL!!

Holy Halloween Costume, Batman!
Does Robin know that a hot chick took his costume and cut it up for use on Halloween? Better put out the bat signal, stat.
While looking for a costume for Halloween, I stumbled on this gem and all I could think is that Robin must be very cold right now. This lady must have stole his outfit while he slept and made a slinky Halloween mini dress!
Now if I could only find the matching version for my man, we would be set! Twin Robins, oh wait "hero cutie adults".
Does everyone else have their outfits picked out or is it just me who is flailing helplessly with no plans?

Another Murder Mystery!
While checking out Newsarama for the January solicitations, I noticed that in Green Arrow/ Black Canary #4 there is apparently a new death on the DCU hit list. Noting this, I figured why wait to see who it is when I can guess now!! Murder mysteries are alwasy compelling that way, even if the end result is a bit of a downer.
Firstly, is it a guy or a girl?
In looking at the outline of the picture, the arms are a bit beefy, so my first thought is that it must be a man. Then I look at the outline of the head and think that it must be a woman. This confuses me already so I will have to put on my thinking cap.
Could it be Black Canary? My odds say no. In an interview with Judd Winick, it appears that she has dodged the bullet for now. My guess would be that if it is a woman, it could be Mia (Speedy). The only hole in that theory is that I always thought that Mia would LIVE with HIV, so she would be around for awhile. This takes her out of the forefront for me, because plotwise it doesn't fit.
Maybe it is an Amazon? They wouldn't have killed Hyppolyta so quickly after bringing her back, and I can't imagine that if it was an Amazon that Wonder Woman would stay in the background while Ollie mourned. It must be someone closer to Ollie then to Diana.
If it is a guy, who would it be? I see Connor in the background of the picture, so he is off the hook as far as I can tell. I don't think it would be Roy Harper either as he has just been established as a Justice League member and there are rumblings of a rebooted Titans that feature him on the team.
If it isn't someone in the "Arrow" family, who could it be?
This leads me back to Black Canary, even though I think it would be too obvious.
All this thinking has just confused me again. I am asking for your help on this. Who do you think it laying there? I am missing someone obvious to be sure. Help my poor, tired brain solve this murder mystery.

Quick Take Reviews for October 14
This week’s comics felt like a breath of fresh air for the most part, followed by a bit of staleness that I tried hard to shake. As mentioned earlier this week, I was pleasantly surprised by Green Arrow/ Black Canary #1 and Wonder Woman #13. Both books have my attention and I am eagerly waiting next month.
The rest of the books I got came with a wide range of emotions. Here is the skinny.
Wonder Girl #2 (of 6): I am really vibing on J. Torres’ scripting. He has a good feel for Cassie, and has done his research. The exchanges between Hercules and Cassie were very well done. The art grew on me as I read the issue, and I think Sanford Greene and Nathan Massengill have a unique style. I can’t wait to see more. Grade: B.
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #24: This storyline has no soul or heart. It feels so contrived that it leaves me cold. “One More Day” may have good intentions, but it just isn’t working for me. I also wish Joe Quesada would have put someone else on art chores. Grade: D.
Stormwatch PHD #12: The final issue of a series I really enjoyed. It figures. Christos Gage did an excellent job fleshing out the characters in this book and I am sorely disappointed to see this end. Ably assisted by Andy Smith on pencils, this was a book I always looked forward to. I am really bummed. Grade: A.
The Punisher Max #51: Holy Crap. This book rules! I love the fact that Barracuda has become such a fitting villain for Frank. Writer Garth Ennis has given the Punisher the fight of his life, and has never let him off the hook easy. I doubt Frank would want it any other way. How he gets out of this one is beyond me though. Artist Goran Parlov brings the darkness and it works well. This book is one of my “must reads” every month. Grade: A.
First Born #2 (of 3): Though very late, First Born is a book I have been eagerly awaiting as it is supposed to redefine the Top Cow universe as we know it. Because of my lack of interest in the Darkness video game, I have mostly been unaware of Jackie Estacado’s place herein for quite sometime. It was great to see him back in action. Yes, I am a sucker for the Top Cow characters. Seeing them done well is always a bit of a high for me. I have to subtract points for severe lateness and am reserving a high grade for the finale. Grade: C.
Black Adam #3 (of 6): This is the kind of book that pushes the envelope in all the right ways. Peter Tomasi and Doug Mahnke have given Black Adam the horror edge that he has always so desperately needed. It works well here. I am completely hooked on this title for the quality work and fresh feel it brings to the DC Universe. It hasn’t taken away from continuity nor done a character reboot to work. It uses what is available and brings an edge to a villain that has always had to play it a bit safe. Grade: A.
Spider-Man Red Sonja #3 (of 5): Mike Oeming has done a nice job of bringing Red Sonja to the readers in his Dynamite Entertainment reboot. Artist Mel Rubi comes along with him to tell the tale of Spider-Man’s team up with the She-Devil with a Sword. Interestingly, I keep thinking back to the old school team up and seeing similarities. It is part flattery and part homage, I think, so I am going to treat it that way. All in all, this book is a fun read that takes my mind off what is happening in current continuity with Peter and Mary Jane. Grade: B-.

Metal Video I Love: Vinnie Vincent Invasion (Feat Mark Slaughter) - Love Kills
I was talking to my friend earlier this week and we chatted about one of our favorite things: metal. We both agree that Vinne Vincent Invasion had some great tunes. I always adored "Love Kills" for the gorgeous vocals by Mark Slaughter and incredible hooks written by Vincent. This song gives me chills every time, even twenty years later.

The Last Cover: Y The Last Man #60
While perusing Newsarama, I stumbled upon the last cover for Y The Last Man, which is ending at issue #60. Seeing the cover filled me with great sadness as I have really enjoyed reading this series and have grown quite fond of the characters.
Seeing this makes me think that Yorick may die, even though his legacy will live on. Either that or he is captured and put to use as a "stud" that will help repopulate the earth. Seeing the toy monkey and the child makes me wonder if maybe Ampersand might not make it and if Yorick's children will inherit the earth.
It could be any of these things, or maybe, as my hubby suggests, the whole thing has just been a dream. Yorick has gone insane and is living inside himself. This entire run may have been very Dallas-like in how it has played out.
Hmmmm. Very fascinating.

Is This Gratuitous: Sorrow #2 Cover
In wandering the internet looking at next week's books, we stumbled upon the cover for the Image Comics book Sorrrow. A four issue mini-series, the book is "a modern take on the classic ghost story". The town of Sorrow, Nevada reads population zero, but the locals know better. Four "young travelers" are stranded in Sorrow and soon find out that the town is not as quiet as it should be.
At any rate, the cover caught my eye because the chick on the front's shirt is wide open and she is about ready to take a shot of what appears to be whiskey. If I didn't know better I would say it looks like she is trying to entice the bad guys rather then hide from them. The girl also has an oddly come hither look for a scary comic book. These things make me think that the cover is a bit gratuitous.
Since this is not the attire I would pick if I would stranded in a ghost town, I have no choice but to make this cover my candidate.

Random Thoughts and Musings
DC must have done a good job of making me curious at the end of the Green Arrow/ Black Canary Wedding Special because I couldn't wait to get home to page the first issue of the new series. To my surprise, I had pretty much guessed correctly what was going on. I really enjoyed the art on the issue, and had a decent first impression. That being said, I am going to read it more thoroughly tonight and see if my gut reaction holds true. Overall, the first issue of Green Arrow and Black Canary made me want to come back for more, if for no other reason then to see the mystery unfold and see Dinah kick some ass.
Wonder Woman #13 was very much a set up for the upcoming Gail Simone run. I was pleased to see loose ends tied up and a more cohesive feel to the scripting. J. Torres really outdid himself. The art by Julian Lopez and Bit was pleasant and I enjoyed seeing a more muscled Diana. After a great deal of apprehension, this issue really put me at ease. Now it is time to bring on the dawn of a new day courtesy of the woman who guided the Birds of Prey through one topnotch story after another.
Since I got home late tonight I really haven't looked at much, but I wanted to share my initial reactions. This week is shaping up to be potentially one of the best ones I have had comic book wise in a while.

It is official. VH1 has announced that Bret Michaels will return for season two of Rock of Love. After failing to find love with winner Jes, the Poison frontman is set to give it another go.

Rock Of Love: The Final Word
I know some of you will be very happy to know that Rock of Love is officially done now. The reunion show was shown on VH-1 Sunday night and unfortunately no one rode off into the sunset.
The bad news is that it is over for now.
The good news is that there appears to be a Rock of Love 2 in the works. Well, it's good news for me!
Here are some highlights and my thoughts about the reunion.
Surprising no one, Jes, the winner, came out and gave Bret the cold shoulder, letting him know that she thought he should have picked Heather. Rather then being annoyed, I actually applaud her for being upfront that she has moved on and doesn't want to be with him. It sounds like there was little to no communication for the last six months because Bret was on the road and Jes went back to her life. As much as I like Jes, and admire her maturity and spirit, I am glad to see that she and Bret are not going to end up a couple. It wouldn't be fair to her at this point in her life, and Bret is always going to be a road dog. I think he would be better off with a more kindred spirit.
What surprised me was how shocked Bret seemed to be when Jes told him her thoughts. I think he was ready to have a relationship and was caught a bit off guard when she was blunt about it not working. I don't think Bret is used to being dumped, you know?
Heather, the runner up, was still very hurt by losing. I think she really loves Bret and wanted an explanation. She and Bret seem to have great chemistry, so I think it boils down to Bret being very attracted to Jes, but also being scared of how serious things could get with Heather. It was nice to see Heather and Bret come to terms with things. I also appreciated that Heather and Lacey made up.
Speaking of Lacey, there was no one else on the show who got as much time as she did. She had a confrontation with Dallas about their big fight and gave him a mean spirited t-shirt. Brandi M. came up and told the audience that she wanted off the show when she found out that Bret had slept with Lacey. This wasn't refuted by Lacey, so obviously there was lots of the naughty going on there.
Lacey ended her spot with a performance of a song called "Shallow". Her band Nocturne sounded pretty good, but I was unimpressed by Lacey's vocals. I have also heard that the supposed song she wrote about the show is actually on youTube and is seen in a performance from 5/12/05. Nice try, Lacey.
Kristia and Brandi C. gave the audience an eye-full with a Romy and Michelle themed matching outfit presentation. Both are as goofy as ever, and seemed ready to date Bret again. Evidently they are now roommates, so God knows that is a VH-1 show in the making!
My favorite cast member Rodeo came out and told Bret she wanted a second chance. Bret seemed to waver a bit, but in extra clips on VH-1, he asked her to dinner. Hopefully the two can at least be friends. Rodeo is a good egg.
I enjoyed the reunion show but thought it was way to short for what was covered. I am hoping to see an extended version either on iTunes or on the inevitable DVD. I would also like to see a "where are they now" segment a year from now to catch up.

New Comics for October 10
What a day it has been! On my way to work this morning, it was dark, which always bums me out. On the way home tonight, after exercising, the darkness added some rain, reminding me that it is definitely fall. The good news is that I had a pleasant Monday, and had a great workout. Hopefully I can get some more like that one in before the end of the week.
In comic book news, it looks like a big stack for me this week. I am happy to see both Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl on the list and am anxious to see the fall out from the Green Arrow/Black Canary wedding in the first issue of that new series. Hopefully this is a good omen that there is tons of great reading ahead of me!

Random Thoughts and Musings
I really should have read my new comics rather then browsing them. I am sitting here today with no good concept for quick take reviews. It is just me and my shame, all alone in the room. Heh.
That being said, I haven't taken a cruise around the blogosphere for awhile, so I thought I would take a look at what the other fine folks around these parts have been saying.
Those crazy folks at Ye Olde Comick Book Blogge explain why Thor should have a beard and show the different types of facial hair available. Good stuff.
Lisa at Sequentially Speaking had Steve Rude at her store. I am all kinds of jealous about this! It sounds like a great time was had by all.
Over at Noetic Concordance, Vaklam takes a stroll down memory lane with his "awesome cover Friday". This week it is all about Nightmask. You rock, Vaklam!
Nick at Comic Overload toes a fantastic round up of reviews of last week's stuff. I always enjoy his take on the new stuff as he is blunt but entertaining at the same time. Check it out!
Mark Engblom has taken his Comic Book Life Lessons one step further and it really works. Mark gives us some examples from horror comics to fit the Halloween month theme. I laughed so hard that I scared myself. Get it? Heh.
Swinebread went to the Stumptown Comics Fest. His report is so well done that it made me feel like I was there. Honestly, I really wish I would have been. It sounds like a great time! Go to Atomic Romance for the nitty gritty.
Whew! What a great round of reading that was! I am so thankful to my fellow bloggers and their daily insights.
On that note, I am off to do laundry and get ready for the Rock of Love reunion show. From what I have heard, it should be off the chain. I am a bit sad though as this is the last show. Rumor on the street is that Rock of Love 2 will be coming, so I might not have to wait too long.

As long as I live, I never thought I would see a nude rendition of Wonder Woman by original artist H.G. Peter. The guy is a legend, having drawn the Amazing Amazon for years, and defining her look. Surely he would keep her drawers on?

I am sitting here in shock. I was very surprised to see this particular image featured on page 20 of November's issue of Playboy. (To see the unedited version, check Playboy.com or the magazine itself.) Author Yoe has a unique vision to be sure. I would never have thought to do a book like this, yet I see it has some historical value, and may give some insight into the creators featured therein. My question is this- are there any unclad male heroes or is it just the ladies?
Has anyone seen this book yet? I am curious to hear more about it and find out Yoe's school of thought.

Hot Metal Video: Doro Pesch - Unholy Love
For years Doro Pesch has reigned as queen of metal. After Lita Ford retired to have a family, Vixen broke up, and Femme Fatale quietely faded away, Doro has been out there making metal music for the masses.
Though I love all the aforementioned ladies and their bands, I have to give Doro mad respect for standing her ground and continuing to rock hard. First fronting Warlock, and now as a solo artist, Doro pushes the boundaries with her incredible voice.

Is This Gratuitous: Uncanny X-Men #491
After much thought, I present to you my candidate for discussion in the gratuitous theme. I almost didn't use this cover but it struck me that the first place my eyes kept going was Storm's butt and that seems a bit unhealthy. Granted she does look quite toned and fit, but I can't help but wonder if they would pose Cyclops or Iceman like that?
Knowing that Storm wears a more revealing costume, the choice to focus on her curves is a bit unfortunate. The good news is that her boobs are not the focus. The bad news is that her hiney is in full display. Because of the focus here, I have to pose the question. This is a very tricky one for me because I appreciate Salvador Larroca's art.
Help me on this one.

Thoughts on Wonder Woman Annual AKA Final Chapter of Heinberg Story
After many months of waiting, last Wednesday brought the final chapter of "Who Is Wonder Woman". Yep, the story that started in August 2006 (of technically June 2006) is finally finished. While this was no means the worst Wonder Woman story I have ever read, it also failed to take it's place in my personal hall of fame.
There are several reasons for that.
Firstly, I couldn't specifically remember the tale being told. Later on I will read te story from start to finish, but certainly I felt I was at a disadvantage reading from a foggy memory.
It also really bothered me that the story was a bit disjointed. Wonder Woman fights a lot. Her female super hero friends, plus a few of the fellas join in the mayhem to fight a "who's who" of Wonder Woman villains. The art by Terry and Rachel Dodson is flashy, but that is the extent of the emotion I felt.
Donna Troy wears the red costume that I thought she had given to Cassie. I thought that was odd. Maybe it was a "back to basics" type of shout out to the reader, but all it really did was confuse me. Why is Donna wearing her black starfield costume in current books? I am wondering how that all came about.
Heracles reverts back to type, becoming the dickhead that he is sometimes portrayed as. I am glad Diana kicked his ass, but I wasn't happy with his sexually predatory nature.
I don't like the fact that supposedly Diana loses her powers and is "human" out of costume. That is just irritating. She has shown no signs of this in current issues. What should I make of this? I personally prefer Diana to be powerful in any guise, and have always appreciated the fact that she is gifted by the gods.
Lastly, I am not a fan of the Nemesis relationship. The Amazons Attack story nailed the coffin for me on it, but I see the seeds here that already bother me. I think Diana is acting out of character in her new relationship with Nemesis, and it feels contrived at this point in time. I enjoyed her relationships with Trevor Barnes and classic Steve Trevor and felt there was a spark there. Here I don't feel it at all.
While I have many quibbles with the story itself, I do appreciate the art stylings of the Dodsons. I also feel Allan Heinberg is a talented writer. His intentions were good, but the follow up never gelled into the greatness I had so hoped for. The "Who is Wonder Woman" story was just alright for me.
That being said, I am very eager to see what Gail Simone will do on the book. I am already missing her desperately on Birds of Prey, and think that it will be hard for anyone to follow her there. Simone is extremely gifted with characterization, and from interviews I have read, she is ready to focus on Wonder Woman as a hero to be reckoned with. I am ready for a solid creative team to bring the book back into focus and give Wonder Woman a cohesiveness she has been lacking since Greg Rucka wrote the title.

Rock of Love: The Decision is Made
As you know, I have been glued to my television set throughout the duration of the season of Rock of Love. As an '80's metal chick, it has been fascinating for me to watch Poison frontman Bret Michaels look for love in a reality dating show. If you would have told me 20 years ago that this was going to happen, I know I would have never believed it.
Fast forward 20 years and here we are. Nice.
After a flurry of dating activity, Bret narrowed the field down to Heather, a fun loving entertainer from Vegas, and Jes, the down to earth Chicago girl who is just 23 years old. These two ladies are night and day in every way possible. Heather is 32 and has been there, done that. She wants to be with Bret and that is it, end of story. Jes is more quiet and reserved in her feelings. It is obvious that she likes Bret, but she has not been as open about the bottom line. To see the showdown here was an eye opener.
Bret took the women to Cabo San Lucas for a final date with each. In both situations, his diabetic condition came up. While dune buggying with Heather, she was shown to be unsympathetic to his health. When it was Jes' turn, she looked a bit frightened. It made me really wonder if this was ultimately a test.
Both dates got hot and heavy and only God knows what happened after the cameras left. I know that Heather professed her love while Jes tried to let her guard down. At the end of the dates, it looked pretty obvious that Jes would win.
And she did.
Bret asked the girls if they would share him and Heather said yes while Jes said no. In Heather's mySpace, she comments that this is untrue and that the scene was altered, but we may never know for sure. It seems to come down to this because Bret sends Heather packing and brings a crying Jes forward for some serious make out action. Meanwhile, Heather is clearly unhappy, and speaks her mind. In the end Jes is the winner and it looks like happy ever after.... except for the fact that in a VH-1 blog interview, Jes states that she has only seen Bret once since the finale. This is not a good sign.
The Flavor of Love blogspot has expanded to cover Rock of Love, and upon some investigation stumbled upon a strange thing. It appears Jes could be pretty chummy with a fella in Chitown. Heather has also altered her mySpace and Bret is now pretty much nowhere to be found. The fall out isn't going to be pretty.
The reunion is the Sunday at 8 p.m. Regular viewers, note the time is different then when the show would usually air. My prediction is that Bret is going to walk away single and that the ladies will continue with their lives, full of reality celebrity fame. I have read that the second season of Rock of Love is casting, so it is anyone's guess what will happen next.
Stay tuned for next week's reactions to the reunion. With Lacey, Tiffany, Brandy C., Brandi M, and the rest of the party animals coming back, it is sure to get ugly. I am just praying there were no physical altercations!

Fast forward 20 years and here we are. Nice.
After a flurry of dating activity, Bret narrowed the field down to Heather, a fun loving entertainer from Vegas, and Jes, the down to earth Chicago girl who is just 23 years old. These two ladies are night and day in every way possible. Heather is 32 and has been there, done that. She wants to be with Bret and that is it, end of story. Jes is more quiet and reserved in her feelings. It is obvious that she likes Bret, but she has not been as open about the bottom line. To see the showdown here was an eye opener.
Bret took the women to Cabo San Lucas for a final date with each. In both situations, his diabetic condition came up. While dune buggying with Heather, she was shown to be unsympathetic to his health. When it was Jes' turn, she looked a bit frightened. It made me really wonder if this was ultimately a test.
Both dates got hot and heavy and only God knows what happened after the cameras left. I know that Heather professed her love while Jes tried to let her guard down. At the end of the dates, it looked pretty obvious that Jes would win.
And she did.
Bret asked the girls if they would share him and Heather said yes while Jes said no. In Heather's mySpace, she comments that this is untrue and that the scene was altered, but we may never know for sure. It seems to come down to this because Bret sends Heather packing and brings a crying Jes forward for some serious make out action. Meanwhile, Heather is clearly unhappy, and speaks her mind. In the end Jes is the winner and it looks like happy ever after.... except for the fact that in a VH-1 blog interview, Jes states that she has only seen Bret once since the finale. This is not a good sign.
The Flavor of Love blogspot has expanded to cover Rock of Love, and upon some investigation stumbled upon a strange thing. It appears Jes could be pretty chummy with a fella in Chitown. Heather has also altered her mySpace and Bret is now pretty much nowhere to be found. The fall out isn't going to be pretty.
The reunion is the Sunday at 8 p.m. Regular viewers, note the time is different then when the show would usually air. My prediction is that Bret is going to walk away single and that the ladies will continue with their lives, full of reality celebrity fame. New Comics for October 3
Happy October to all of you! It is time to start thinking about Halloween costumes, carving pumpkins, and trick or treating. As a big lover of all things Halloween, I am looking forward to trying to find the perfect costume.
